Revolution Prep in Santa Monica reached out to us for some exterior and interior signage for their location on 3rd Street Promenade. Interior signage is flexible because our only constraints are physical constraints such as weight, size, installation method, etc. However, the exterior sign process can take longer simply because of the approval process. Exterior signs require a sign permit and in order to secure a permit, approval is required by the landlord and the city. Depending on the city and the particular zone you’re in, sign criteria can be a little more strict.
When Revolution Prep first approached us about the exterior sign, they wanted an internally illuminated sign to go on the exterior wall which is made of glass. As we started looking into the city sign regulations, we came to find that the sign could only be a certain height from the top of where the first floor ends, which was essentially the top of the canopy. This meant that we couldn’t put a sign on the wall, it would need to rest on top of the canopy and could not be too tall. The next issue we ran into was the visibility. Due to the size of the canopy, you wouldn’t be able to see a sign that was on top of the back part of the canopy from the sidewalk. In cases like this, we would just move the sign closer to the edge of the canopy, however, due to the shape, we couldn’t do so without making the width of the sign too small. We considered putting the sign on the curve of the canopy itself, but due to the number of letters, you would only be able to see part of the sign at a time.
As you can see from the photos, the final solution was to mount the letters under the canopy and put the logo on the canopy since it was just one piece. After we went through a few different color combinations, Revolution Prep decided to go with their company orange and a backer panel to match the color of the canopy.
