Burbank Paint Company found us online and gave us a call because they were looking for a local sign company. Their pole sign faces were damaged in an accident and needed to be replaced. Pole signs like this have metal retainers that house the light source and hold the sign faces. Luckily, the faces are the easiest part to replace because they are meant to be switched out. For the new faces, we used Tuf Glas. Tuf Glas is an impact-modified acrylic that comes in large rolls rather than sheets so we were able to make this approximately 6′ x 12′ in one piece instead of multiple pieces as we would need to do with standard acrylic. Tuf Glas is also better for large sign faces because it is more durable. As you can see from the before photos, this is important for outdoor signs because you never know what could come in contact with your sign face.
The existing sign read “Burbank PAINT HARDWARE” in thin dimensional lettering and a couple of the letters had fallen off over time. Their initial plan was to replace the sign faces with newer versions of what they already had, but after reviewing the proofs, they decided to change “HARDWARE” to “Since 1946”. These new sign faces are going to be up for a while so they decided to change the information displayed while they still could.
The lettering was routed from 3/16″ red and blue acrylic and glued to the 3/16″ Tuf Glas faces. The lettering is not too thick but adds more dimension, and the colors of pre-colored acrylic last longer than pre-colored vinyl and much longer than digitally printed colors. When a sign is going to be exposed to sunlight all day, you want to take materials and color-fading into consideration like Burbank Paint Company did for their exterior signs.
