Voodoo is a new clothing store in downtown Los Angles that we made a storefront sign for. They wanted an illuminated sign of their logo that was reverse-lit with the same purple color. To give them the customized look they wanted, we made them a reverse-lit channel letter sign with RGB LEDs. As you can see from the photos, the unique color really helps the sign stand out from the generally neutral colors in the neighborhood.
When a client is looking for internally illuminated letters, we usually make them channel letters. Channel letters are hollow metal letters that have LED inside of them. We can make the face translucent, the back clear, or both depending on where we want the light to come out of.
For this sign, we made the faces and returns from aluminum that were custom painted. The client’s logo called out a CMYK color but it doesn’t translate to paint so we had them pick a Pantone color to use for the sign. LEDs come in standard colors like white, red, and blue, but the client wanted purple to match the logo color. In order to achieve this, we used color-changing RGB LEDs and set them to the specific shade of purple. Once the LEDs were installed inside of the channel letter, the letter is closed up with a clear Lexan backer. We want to make sure the back is clear so the LEDs can shine through, and we use Lexan because it is a UL listed material. We are a UL listed company and only use UL listed products for our electrical signs.
When the channel letters are installed, we mount them with spacers. If they were mounted directly onto the wall, the illumination would be stifled and you wouldn’t see any of the purple lighting. To create the perfect amount of illumination, we mounted these letters with 1.5″ spacers.
