First Baptist Church of Canoga Park needed signs directional signs for the exterior walls so we made them mounted digital prints with cut vinyl. Mounted digital prints are just digital prints on vinyl that are mounted to a rigid substrate. In this case, the substrate we used is sibond. As you can see from the photos, mounted digital prints are completely customizable and you can include a myriad of colors since we are printing.
The reason we decided to partially print the sign and use cut vinyl for the rest is because there were so many different shades of green in the logo and they were specific shades of green. When using vinyl for outdoor signs we prefer to use pre-colored cut vinyl when we can because it will last longer than digital prints due to sun exposure. However, although pre-colored vinyl is available in many different colors, we cannot match the logo colors exactly, especially if there are so many different colors involved. Because of this, we digitally printed the logo. Since the lettering and arrows were just going to be black, we used standard black vinyl.
We used sibond as the substrate because it’s an inexpensive alternative to metal that is rigid and great for outdoor use. Sibond also comes in white which was perfect because the background of the signs was going to be white. Sibond is a black polycarbonate that is sandwiched between two sheets of aluminum so you can see the black from the sides. This is not usually an issue to the client as sibond comes in 3mm or 6mm thickness so the sides are not too prominent.
The signs were mounted with VHB and silicone. VHB stands for very high bonding. We use 3M VHB tape with silicone for many installations so the VHB can hold the signs in place until the silicone dries.
