Recently, we were contacted by Cicon Engineering in Chatsworth, CA, for some building signage. They have another location in Van Nuys and wanted an exterior sign for this location as well. They wanted a letter sign, something that would be large enough to attract attention. Even though this location is not in a busy place, it is still important to have an exterior building sign for all to see.
In the image, you can see how their sign turned out. The existing sign was a non-illuminated dimensional letter sign. When you use letters that are 3-dimensional and don’t need to be illuminated, they can be made from various materials.
Established in 1988, Cicon Engineering is a small business and a total service interconnect facility. They operate primarily in harness assemblies for electronic use, the wire and cable industry within the electronics and components sector. They are certified to be AS9100 and ITAR compliant. To create the dimensional letter sign for Cicon Engineering, we first had to determine which material we would use. There are three typical options: plastic, metal, or foam. When we use plastic, it is always acrylic, because acrylic is very versatile. It comes in a variety of color options, we can paint it if need be, and a metal laminate can be applied to its faces.
For clients who would rather have a metallic look, we use aluminum. Aluminum is very lightweight, and it can be painted and anodized. By anodizing aluminum, we are giving the metal more strength and making it more durable, which means it’s less likely to corrode. Aluminum finishes are brushed or polished.
Some businesses want foam signs for their outdoor signs, which we do not recommend. It may be a cheaper option, but it will not hold up as plastic or metal. Cicon Engineering decided on acrylic dimensional letters because they wanted the letters to be navy and they were also looking for a print of their logo. As it turned out, they opted out of the logo, so we created the sign to their specifications to read “CICON ENGINEERING.”
