Heat Soak Is the Culprit
When you shut off a hot engine, the heat doesn't leave right away. It sits there and soaks into everything nearby, the starter included. The starter has a motor and electrical bits inside, and heat makes them act up. A starter on its way out works fine cold and quits when it's hot, because the heat swells the parts and raises the resistance so it can't pull enough to spin the engine. - One loud click and no crank, which points at the starter solenoid

- A slow, dragging crank that won't quite catch
- Dead silence when hot, then normal once it cools
