Castro Valley, CA – Is Your Mazda CX-5 Pulling to One Side? What's the Cause?

SYNOPSIS: This article covers why your Mazda CX-5 might be pulling to one side, including the usual causes, and what to check before bringing it in. First thing, check the pressure in all four tires.

The Mazda CX-5 Pulling Issues And Causes

BY: Arun Coumar, Driven Auto Care of Castro Valley, CA
A car that pulls is one of those things you notice once and can't unnotice. Let off the wheel for a second on a flat road and the CX-5 drifts left. Tugs right when you brake. Or just feels like you're fighting it on the freeway. Whatever it's doing, pulling usually has a clear cause. Most of them are fixable. Tire Pressure Check this first. Always. A tire 8 or 10 PSI low will pull the car that way. People skip this and pay for alignments they didn't need. Pop the cap, check all four, and set them to the number on the door jamb. Drive it. Pull's gone? That was it. While you're down there, look for a nail or a slow leak. A tire that keeps going low has a reason. Uneven Tire Wear Tires worn unevenly across the tread can pull on their own, even at proper pressure. CX-5s that don't get rotated wear the fronts faster than the rears, and uneven front wear shows up as a pull or a wandering feel. Sometimes, swapping the fronts side to side will tell you. Pull switches direction? It's the tire. Alignment Pressures are right, tires look even, then alignment is next. Hit a pothole or bumped a curb pulling out of a spot. Any of that can knock things out enough to pull, and you'll chew through tires fast. A real alignment puts the camber, toe, and caster back where Mazda set them. Worth doing every couple of years anyway, with how some of these roads are. Brake Pull If the CX-5 only pulls when you brake, that's a different problem. Usually, it's a stuck caliper, a collapsed brake hose, or uneven pad wear. The pull gets worse as the brake heats up. Sometimes you'll smell hot brakes after a longer drive. Not an alignment issue. Don't waste a trip to the alignment rack on a brake pull. Worn Suspension Parts Older CX-5s with miles on them can pull from worn suspension parts. Control arm bushings, ball joints, and sway bar end links. Any of those wearing can change how the wheels track and cause a pull, sometimes with a clunk over bumps. Usually shows up with steering that feels vague or a ride that's gotten less stable than you remember. Road Crown vs Real Pull Quick note. Most roads are crowned, higher in the middle, so water runs off. Almost every car drifts a little to the right because of it. That's road crown, not a pull. A real pull is when the car drifts hard on a flat surface or pulls enough that you're holding the wheel against it. Not sure? Find a flat parking lot and try it there. What to Check Before You Come In A few things worth doing yourself:
  • Tire pressures, all four
  • Look for uneven wear or a nail
  • Note if it pulls all the time or only when braking
  • Think back to any curbs, potholes, or hard hits
If your CX-5 is pulling and you can't sort it out yourself, bring it by Driven Auto Care of Castro Valley. We'll figure out whether it's a tire, an alignment, or something else before any work gets done.
