Castro Valley, CA – BMW 3 Series Oil Leak: What Are the Most Common Causes?

SYNOPSIS: This article covers some of the most common oil leaks on a BMW 3 Series, where they show up, and why some turn into bigger problems if you wait too long to get them fixed.

What Can Make A BMW 3 Series Might Leak Oil

BY: Arun Coumar, Driven Auto Care of Castro Valley, CA
Own a 3 Series long enough, and you'll find a spot on the driveway. BMW's leak. Past 60,000 miles, it just happens. The good news is that most of these leaks are well known by now, and a decent shop can pin down which one you've got pretty quickly. Valve Cover Gasket The most common one. The valve cover sits on top of the engine, and the gasket sealing it gets baked over time. Once it gives up, oil runs down the side of the engine and onto the exhaust manifold. That's the burning oil smell you catch at a red light. What you'll notice:
  • Oil smells after a drive, worse at idle
  • Light smoke from the engine bay when stopped
  • Oil sitting in the spark plug wells
  • Drips on the driveway or garage floor
The N52 and N54 engines are famous for this. The N20 has its own take on the same issue. Past 70,000 miles and never had it done? You're due. Oil Filter Housing Gasket Second on the list, right behind the valve cover. The oil filter housing on most BMW inline-sixes bolts to the side of the engine, and the gasket between them wears out. When it lets go, oil drips down onto the belt, the alternator, and sometimes the starter. Oil on a serpentine belt is bad news. The belt eats itself and can come apart with no warning. Oil Pan Gasket The pan gasket sits at the bottom of the engine and shows up as drips right under the car. Slower leak usually. More of a steady drip than a puddle. Job's a pain because the subframe sometimes has to come down to drop the pan, depending on the model. Rear Main Seal The rear main sits between the engine and transmission. When it leaks, oil drips from the bell housing area. Looks a lot like a transmission leak from underneath. Expensive job. The trans has to come out. Some 3 Series owners drive on a small seep here for years and never do anything about it. A heavy leak is a different conversation. Vanos and Oil Filter Housing Lines Higher mileage cars sometimes leak from the oil lines feeding the Vanos system, or from the Vanos solenoid seals themselves. Shows up as oil higher up on the front of the engine. Less common than the gaskets above, but it happens. Why Small Leaks Get Bigger A slow drip sounds like nothing until you think about a few things. Oil on the belt is a problem. Oil on a hot exhaust is a fire risk. Low oil from a steady leak can starve the engine if you're not checking levels. And BMWs already use more oil than most cars, so a leak on top of normal consumption adds up faster than you'd think. Another thing is, leaks don't stay small. A weeping gasket gets worse over months, not years. What to Tell Us A few things help us narrow it down before the car goes up on the lift:
  • Where's the spot under the car?
  • Smell oil after driving?
  • Any smoke from the engine bay at stops?
  • When was the last oil service?
If your 3 Series is leaving spots on the driveway, bring it by Driven Auto Care of Castro Valley. We'll dye-test it if we have to and tell you exactly which gasket is the issue before throwing parts at it.
