Castro Valley CA – Chevy Silverado Making a Grinding Noise? Here's What to Check

SYNOPSIS: This article covers why your Chevy Silverado might be making a tough grinding noise, where the sound most usually comes from, and why some grinds need attention right away.

What's That Grinding Sound In My Chevy Silverado?

BY: Arun Coumar, Driven Auto Care of Castro Valley, CA
A grinding noise from a truck is hard to ignore. You hear it once, and your ear locks onto it. People bring Silverados in for this all the time, and what's causing it depends almost entirely on when the sound shows up and what you're doing when it does. Grinding When You Brake The most common one we see. If the grind only happens when you press the pedal, that's metal on metal at the brakes. The pads are worn down past the friction material and now the backing plate is digging into the rotor. By then, it's not just pads. The rotors are usually scored badly enough that they have to come off, too. Push it any longer and the calipers start taking damage, and a regular brake job turns into something a lot pricier. Pedal vibrating too? Rotors are warped on top of being worn. Either way, don't sit on it. Grinding When You Turn A grinding or growling sound in turns usually points to a wheel bearing. Silverados eat front wheel bearings, especially the half-tons doing tow or haul work. Sound often gets louder turning one way and quieter the other. That's how we know which side. A bad bearing isn't something you drive on for months. The hub can come apart on you, and that turns into a tow. Grinding From the Front End Over Bumps Worn ball joints, tie rod ends, or sway bar links can grind or crunch when you hit dips or speed bumps. Silverados beat these parts up, and they go faster on trucks that work dirt roads, job sites, or pull a trailer regularly. Steering usually feels a little loose by then, too. Grinding When You Shift or Accelerate This one's more serious. A grind that lines up with a shift point at the transmission. On the automatics, that might be a torque converter issue or internal wear. On a manual, usually clutch or synchro. A grind under acceleration that gets worse with speed could be a U-joint, especially on 4WDs. U-joints clunk first, grind second, fail third. Catch it before it lets go on 580. Grinding at Startup A quick grind for a second when you turn the key is the starter not disengaging cleanly. It's probably going. Sometimes it's a flexplate, which is a bigger job. Either way, don't tune it out. Grinding From the Rear A grinding from the back end usually means the rear diff. Low fluid, worn gears, or a bad pinion bearing all show up as a grind or whine that changes with speed. Silverados that have towed a lot without regular diff fluid changes are the usual ones we see. What to Pay Attention To When you bring the truck in, the more you can tell us, the faster we sort it out:
  • Does it grind only when braking, turning, or accelerating?
  • Does it change with speed?
  • Worse when warm or cold?
  • Did it start suddenly or build up over weeks?
If your Silverado is making a noise that wasn't there last month, bring it by Driven Auto Care of Castro Valley. We'll figure out what it is before it turns into something worse.
