Hayward, CA – Why Won't My Jeep Wrangler Start in Cold Weather? | Auto Repair

SYNOPSIS: This article covers why your Jeep Wrangler might struggle to start on cold mornings, the parts that usually cause it, and what to check before it leaves you stuck in the driveway.

Is Your Jeep Wrangler Not Starting in Winter?

BY: Arun Coumar, Driven Auto Care of Castro Valley, CA
Bay Area cold doesn’t quite compare to the -20°F at night in Minnesota, but 38 degrees in Hayward is enough to find every weak link in your Wrangler's starting system. If yours has been cranking slowly, clicking, or just sitting there when you turn the key, it's usually one of a few things. Battery First, Always Cold mornings are hard on batteries. One that tested fine in August can fall apart once temps drop into the 30s. The chemistry slows down. Cranking power drops. A four-year-old battery might be running on fumes and you wouldn't know until a cold morning calls its bluff. What to watch for:
  • Slow cranking that gets worse the colder it is
  • Headlights are going dim when you turn the key
  • A click and nothing else
  • Dash lights flickering during start
  • Needing a jump after the Jeep sits for a couple of days
A load test takes ten minutes. Don't just go by age. But past four years, keep an eye on it. Starter Issues Look the Same A tired starter acts a lot like a weak battery. People get fooled by it all the time. The difference is in the sound. Slow cranking with a fresh battery. A grinding noise. One click and silence. Wrangler starters take a beating, especially on TJs and JKs, and they don't always warn you before they go. The new battery didn't fix it? Starter is next. Fuel That Drains Back Overnight Higher-mileage Wranglers sometimes develop a fuel pressure problem that only shows up cold. The check valve in the fuel pump fails. Fuel drains back to the tank while the Jeep sits. Now it has to crank an extra few seconds to build pressure before it fires. The clue is cranking that goes on longer than normal. If it starts right up after running errands but fights you in the morning, that's the one. Plugs and Coils Old spark plugs make cold starts harder. So do weak coils. Cold fuel needs a strong spark to light. If the Jeep also runs rough for the first minute or stumbles at idle, the ignition side is worth a look. Thick Oil Cold oil is thicker. If you're overdue for a change or running a heavier weight than your Wrangler asks for, the engine works harder to turn over. Usually, it's not the only issue, but it adds up with everything else. Stuff You Can Check Yourself
  • Battery terminals. Loose or corroded?
  • Battery age. The sticker is usually right on top.
  • Do dash lights brighten or dim when you crank?
  • Click? Slow crank? Nothing at all?
