Technology has made a tremendous impact on how today’s vehicles perform, the luxury features they offer, and how efficient they are. However, any time new tech is introduced into a vehicle, it presents the possibility of complications.

As a leading provider of auto services in the San Jose area, we have worked with modern vehicles of all makes and models. We have the right equipment, expertise, and approach to take on any type of tech issue and get a vehicle back to proper operation.

One such example of an issue related to a technical innovation occurs with the Mazda CX-5. In this article we will define the “lifter tick” issue, discuss how we diagnose it, and what repair options are available for this relatively common problem.

Cylinder Deactivation

One area of focus for new auto innovation is efficiency. Manufacturers are always trying to find a way to get more out of less, use less fuel, and minimize their impact on the environment. To achieve this goal, CX-5s are equipped with a feature which deactivates two of the four cylinders in the engine when the vehicle has reached cruising speed. Put simply, the CX-5 has a switch which flips when the computer recognizes the vehicle is at cruising speed and it keeps two cylinders in the down position until they need to be brought back online. This change only happens when the vehicle is moving at a consistent speed with light stress on the engine.

Cause of Lifter Tick

The “lifter tick” issue stems from this cylinder deactivation process. Because the cylinders are only deactivated when the car is moving, all four cylinders are functioning when the car is idle or driving under normal circumstances. The lifter tick happens when the car sits after a long drive or idles for a long period of time. The “switch” which deactivates two cylinders is a hydraulic lever, and over time, air can seep into the mechanism. When this happens, there is an air gap in the valvetrain. This gap allows for the metal components of the cylinders to touch when the car starts back up, and this metal on metal sound is what is known as the lifter tick. Over time, pressure forces the air out and the sound typically disappears.

Diagnosing Lifter Tick

This issue is fairly easy to diagnose, as it is common in certain CX-5 models. If your car has a clicking noise under the hood which is present at startup and typically goes away after a few minutes of driving, lifter tick is the most likely issue. If the problem persists, it can point to a flaw in the cylinder deactivation system which must be addressed.

Repair Options

If your CX-5 has infrequent lifter tick noises which typically subside within a few minutes of driving, there is likely no action needed. This is a known issue with the CX-5 and if it goes away quickly, damage is likely not being done. If the issue persists, then an actual component of the system could be damaged or the computer/sensors are having an issue.

We are happy to provide a professional diagnosis if your CX-5 is having a lifter tick issue, and let you know the best path forward for your vehicle. To learn more about our services or book an appointment, contact us today.
