Los Gatos, CA — Toyota 4Runner Brake Pad Wear Symptoms and What They Mean

The Toyota 4Runner has been a popular SUV for many years due to its styling, practicality, and reliability. While Toyota vehicles are very reliable in general, they do run into some issues, especially over time with normal wear and tear. One common issue is brake pad wear, and many owners aren’t sure how to react to brake pad wear symptoms.

Our team is proud to be one of the leading providers of automotive services in the San Jose area. We have a great deal of experience working on today’s top brands of vehicles and older models as well. Our unique approach, experienced technicians, and customer-focused attitude have helped us build a great reputation in our community.

In this article, we will provide some insight into how we assist with 4Runner brake pad issues. Specifically, we will discuss what you might experience if your brakes have an issue and we will also detail our repair process for these issues.

High-Pitched Squealing Sound

The most common symptom of brake pad wear is a high pitched squeal when applying the brakes. Your 4Runner’s brake pads clamp down on the rotors to cause the vehicle to stop, and the brake pads are coated in a friction-inducing material like ceramic to allow it to smoothly stop. However, this material slowly wears away over time, and when it’s gone, you’re left with the metal base of the pad scraping against the metal of the rotor, resulting in the squeal you’re hearing. Luckily, replacing brake pads is a normal part of vehicle maintenance, and our team can handle this task quickly for 4Runners.

Vibration When Braking

If you’re experiencing a symptom related to performance rather than noise, it might point to a more significant issue. It can be alarming if your steering wheel vibrates when braking, but this is a fairly common issue which relates to the brake pads. Vibration points to uneven wear, when parts of the brake pad or different brake pads on the vehicle wear at different rates. This is typically due to a caliper issue or warped rotors. In either case, if you’re experiencing a vibration, let us check out your 4Runner to make sure there isn’t a significant issue.

Pulling to One Side

Uneven brake pad wear can sometimes cause another issue, which is the vehicle wanting to favor one side or the other when braking. The pads might be worn due to warped rotors, but pulling often indicates an issue with a caliper. Brake calipers are the actual mechanism which causes the pads to squeeze down on the rotors and stop the vehicle. Sometimes, a caliper can get stuck in the engaged position, causing all or part of the brake pad to press down longer or more often than expected. This promotes wear on this brake pad, and causes pulling to one side or another.

If you’re having issues with your 4Runner’s brakes, we can help. To book your service with one of our expert technicians, give us a call today.
