Diagnosing Ford Escape Transmission Issues and Providin

Ford’s Escape has been a long-running small SUV which is a favorite of people seeking a practical American-made vehicle. The Escape is generally a reliable vehicle, but like any type of car, it does have a few weak points which can cause issues over time or under the right circumstances.

Our auto shop has worked on many Escapes over the years, along with countless other makes and models of vehicles. We are proud to be the top choice for people across the San Jose area for any type of vehicle repair, maintenance, or service needs, and we would love the chance to help you as well.

One of the more common issues we see with the Ford Escape has to do with its transmission. In this article, we will take a deeper dive into why the Escape might suffer from a transmission shudder and provide insight into how we diagnose and repair these issues.

Most Common Issue: Torque Converter Failure

Typically when someone reports a shaking, inconsistent, or shuddering feeling in a Ford Escape, the issue has to do with the torque converter. If you aren’t familiar with a torque converter, it’s essentially the mechanism in an automatic vehicle which replaces the clutch of a manual car. The torque converter in the Escape is a known issue, and Ford has even put out statements regarding the problems which this component has caused. The torque converter in Escapes typically fails because of a temperature issue. Transmission fluid gets too hot and becomes ineffective, leading to failure of the torque converter. Aside from transmission shudder, symptoms of a failing torque converter include strange noises and rough idling.

Potential Issue: Engine Misfires

Usually a shuddering transmission in an Escape is due to a torque converter problem, but it also could be engine misfires. A misfiring engine can happen for a number of reasons, and can feel like a shudder or as if the vehicle is missing a beat. Misfires are due to issues with fuel and cleanliness in the combustion chamber. The severity of a misfiring issue can be as simple as a failing seal or as complex as a fuel injection issue, but in any case it makes sense to have a misfiring vehicle checked out before major engine damage is done.

Professional Repair and Diagnosis Available

A transmission shudder can be scary and concerning if it’s happening in your vehicle. Luckily, we deal with transmission issues often and we’re likely able to provide a quick and lasting repair. When we see an Escape with a transmission shudder, we perform a full diagnostic of the vehicle using the computer system and a full physical inspection. For torque converter issues, we can typically replace a failing torque converter easily and get you back on the road in no time. Misfires can get a little trickier depending on the root cause, but we’re confident we can make a complete repair for almost any issue.
