As is the case with almost any vehicle, the Q5 requires the driver to press the brake down in order to start the car. The Q5 features a unique brake assist system, and in cold weather this system can fail due to electrical issues, or a brake line supply issue. When this happens, the pedal can become difficult or impossible to press down when the car is off. If the brake pedal won’t press down, the car’s safety system will not allow it to start.
Dead Battery
If the brakes seem to be working properly, the next thing we check is the battery. Batteries can struggle more in colder weather, and if your battery is on its way out then the cold can cause it to fail or struggle. Batteries last anywhere from three to five years on average, so if your Q5 is a few years old and has never had a new battery, then this is a likely culprit for starting issues. Luckily, battery replacement is a common and easy task for our team.
Fuel Supply Problem
While a dead battery can happen to any vehicle, the brake system issue and this next problem are more unique to the Q5 and cars with a similar design. Whether your Q5 is diesel or gas powered, severe cold temperatures can create issues with the car’s fuel supply. While this issue typically occurs in climates much colder than ours, it can explain why a Q5 won’t start. If this is the issue, you can expect the car to try to crank but not turn over due to a lack of fuel getting to the engine.
