San Jose, CA — Why Is Your Acura MDX Making Strange Grinding Noises?

Any time your vehicle makes an unexpected noise, it can be cause for concern. As a leading provider of auto repair and maintenance in the San Jose area, we have worked on cars of all makes and models, and we have probably heard just about any noise a vehicle can make. Luckily, since we have extensive repair experience, if your car makes a strange noise, we’re the perfect team to fix it.

Grinding noises are among the most common reasons for concerns among drivers. The source of grinding depends on when the noise occurs, the type of vehicle you drive, and the condition of its critical systems. We work on all makes and models of vehicles, including luxury and foreign cars.

In this article we will discuss one vehicle in particular: the Acura MDX. We work with many Acura owners, and have diagnosed and repaired many MDXs with grinding issues. Read on to learn what causes grinding noises in the MDX and the steps we take to diagnose and repair these issues.

Brake Pad Wear

Perhaps the most common reason for grinding noises in the MDX (and most other vehicles) is an issue with the braking system. To slow down your vehicle, brake pads are pressed down on the rotors, which slow the wheels. These pads are coated with materials which cause friction, and over time this material wears down, leaving behind nothing but the metal bracket which holds the pad in place. When this happens, you get an awful metal-on-metal sound when braking. Luckily, brake pads are meant to be replaced over time, and this is a fast, simple, and cost-effective repair.

Debris Lodged in Rotor

Another fairly simple issue which can cause a grinding noise is a small rock or other debris becoming lodged in the components of the braking system. This is fairly common in the MDX, and if this is your issue, the grinding typically happens when driving, accelerating, or turning. Again, this is usually an easy fix and it can even resolve itself on its own over time if the debris becomes dislodged on its own.

Steering System Issues

The MDX’s steering system features many components which all work together to provide a smooth ride. However, a grinding noise can hint at potential issues if it happens when turning. Problems with the power steering system can lead to fluid leaks, and the lack of lubrication can cause grinding. In addition to power steering, the MDX also can experience grinding noises when the front wheel bearings or struts have experienced wear or are damaged.

If you’re hearing a grinding noise in your MDX, it typically is something which should be addressed quickly to avoid damaging your vehicle. For a professional diagnosis, expert repair, and friendly service, come see us today.
