Clients may choose which approach to legal representation best serves their needs and budgets–unbundled or full service. The purpose of the unbundled or limited scope approach to divorce is to save the client money. Unbundled divorce works well if the client has both the ability and the time to do some of the work on the client’s own divorce.
Unbundling divorce services involves dividing the tasks necessary to complete a divorce between the lawyer and the client. Where a client decides to assume a task, the client is always given full instruction by the Law Offices of Duane Henry so that the client can competently and successfully perform that task.
Some divorce-related tasks can readily be performed by the client under the direction and guidance of the attorney. For example, there is a substantial amount of fact-finding and data compilation required in connection with a divorce. The client can prepare first drafts of necessary documents and filings for review by the attorney. In addition, the client can take documents prepared jointly with the attorney to the docket office at the court and handle the physical filing thereof. Some clients can prepare their own documents for filing under the direction of the attorney, but want the attorney to appear with them, or for them, at the court hearing. In contrast, other clients want the attorney to prepare the documents for filing, but are comfortable appearing in court by themselves with advance instruction from the attorney. There are endless possible variations of dividing tasks between attorney and client.
The more tasks that the client assumes, the less time the attorney needs to spend on that client’s case. As a result the client’s legal bill is lower.
