A fiscal year is a 12 month period of business, that your business has preformed.  A standard fiscal year would be January through December.  Exceptions to this would be filing dates of a Corporation.  In some cases, the corporation fiscal year can be from the date of becoming a corporation.  So if your corporation date was effective June 1st then your fiscal year would be June to June.  When filing you can request a Jan to Dec fiscal year.
