Walking into an indoor shooting range for the first time can feel intimidating—but it doesn’t have to be. At C2 Tactical, beginners are not only welcome, but they’re expected. Whether you’re renting a firearm, attending your first lesson, or tagging along with friends, understanding how indoor ranges operate will help you relax and enjoy the experience while staying safe.
Start With the Fundamentals of Range Safety
Every safe range experience begins with the four core firearm safety rules: always treat firearms as loaded, never point the muzzle at anything you’re not willing to shoot, keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire, and know your target and what’s beyond it. These rules are enforced at C2 Tactical, and Range Safety Officers (RSOs) are always present to help guide you.
Eye and ear protection are mandatory. If you don’t own one, C2 Tactical offers rentals and range packages. Closed-toe shoes are required, and high-collared shirts are strongly recommended to prevent hot brass from slipping inside your clothing.
Know What to Expect When You Arrive
When you check in, staff will verify your ID, explain the range rules, and help you select a lane, a rental firearm, or a package, if needed. If you’re brand new to shooting, C2 Tactical’s New to Shooting resources and staff walkthroughs are designed to get you comfortable before you ever step onto the range floor.
Once assigned a lane, an RSO will review safe firearm handling, explain how the target system works, and answer questions. Don’t rush this part—asking questions is encouraged, especially on your first visit.
Indoor Range Etiquette Matters
Indoor ranges are controlled environments, and good etiquette keeps everyone safe. Always keep firearms pointed downrange, even when unloaded. If you need to adjust a target or step forward of the firing line, make sure your firearm is unloaded, benched, and flagged according to RSO instructions.
Avoid rapid or erratic movements, especially behind the firing line. If you experience a malfunction, keep the muzzle downrange and raise your hand—an RSO will assist you.
Choose the Right Ammo and Equipment.
Indoor ranges have specific ammunition rules. C2 Tactical does not allow steel-core, tracer, or armor-piercing rounds. If you’re renting a firearm, you must use range-approved ammunition purchased on site. This protects the facility and ensures a safe shooting environment for everyone.
If you’re unsure what ammo your firearm needs, the staff or a Private Firearm Consultation can point you in the right direction.
Training Makes a Difference.
One of the fastest ways to feel confident is to schedule a Private Shooting Lesson. Instructors work one-on-one with beginners to teach grip, stance, sight alignment, and trigger control in a calm, structured setting. Group classes are also available if you prefer learning with friends or family.
C2 Tactical also offers simulator-only sessions, which allow new shooters to practice decision-making and fundamentals without live fire—a great confidence builder before stepping onto the range.
Build Good Habits Early
Take your time, focus on fundamentals, and don’t compare yourself to other shooters. Indoor range shooting is about consistency and safety, not speed. Clean your firearm after your session, log what you learned, and plan your next visit while the experience is fresh.
