Made by Sig Sauer, a Swiss company with established roots in the US as well, the MPX 9MM submachine gun has been awarded contracts from the Army and several other nation’s armed forces in recent years.
One of just a few models worldwide, the MPX is a gas-powered weapon. This is rare for a SMG, and paired with a locking rotary bolt it makes for a unique but effective shooting process. It also fires with a closed bolt, making it one of the safer options on the market and ideal for military use.
Perhaps one of the biggest draws of the MPX for military use (and a big selling point for the civilian-legal pistol version) is the ability to customize the weapon to meet the needs of different shooters.
It’s easy for the gun to be modified for left or right-handed shooters, and the barrel comes in different lengths. The Army chose to order two different barrel lengths in its initial contract for the MPX, choosing an equal number of 4.5” and 8” variations.
While the initial setup was for those lengths, the ability to easily adapt the weapon to a user’s needs easily is a big perk of the MPX. A soldier can remove and replace the barrel in the field with no tools needed.
The gun also has different stocks, magazine sizes, sights and other accessories which can be easily added, removed and/or changed on the fly, making it an ideal weapon for a large force with different preferences.
While the MPX is not available for civilian purchase, 9MM pistol-caliber carbine variations are. Available in three distinct variations, these guns are very popular in the shooting community and have been praised for their durability, accuracy and value.
