How Goals Play a Part
If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there. For recovery, you need to have clear expectations and an idea of how your recovery will go, what you would like to accomplish, and what it will take to support that notion.
Simply “getting better” is not descriptive enough. You need SMART goals.
- Specific
- Measurable
- Attainable
- Results-focused
- Time-based
What is possible may vary depending on the severity of the injury or accident. Working with a doctor and the certified, qualified ICBC active rehabilitation staff at FIT Nation will help you determine what goals fit the SMART criteria and will be reasonable to expect during the recovery process.
What to Expect
Early into the program, it’s prudent not to expect too much too soon. After all, some injuries have essentially changed a significant component of our bodies, and the impact could be permanent even if it’s not immediately noticeable.
In the short term, the focus will be on encouraging the swelling to go down. Simple, controlled movements will help establish how mobility has been impacted and by how much specifically.
For example, you may have an injured leg and find that a lunging motion with your healthy leg has a larger range of motion than a lunge with the other. If it is a great difference, the first goal may be to work until the movement is within 2 cm of the other leg’s range of motion.
That might sound simple, but it may take time and hard work.
After easing into a more normal range of motion, success will be determined by your body’s ability to perform certain tasks. Perhaps you are able to do a set of jumping jacks. Can you do 2 or 3 without aggravating the injury?
By focusing on this next goal, you will continue working towards normal function and returning to a pre-injury life.
