Sunol, CA - Why Does Your 2018 Ford Explorer Have Transmission Repair Issues?

SYNOPSIS: Harsh shifts, shuddering, slow engagement, or fluid leaks may signal transmission trouble in your 2018 Ford Explorer. Learn why accurate testing should come before major repairs.

Transmission Symptoms Need Proper Diagnosis

BY: Arun Coumar, Driven Auto Care of Fremont, CA

If your 2018 Ford Explorer has started shifting harshly, hesitating to engage, shuddering under acceleration, or leaking transmission fluid, the problem warrants attention. Ford's owner's manual specifically says to check the transmission fluid when the transmission slips, shifts slowly, or shows signs of leakage. Those symptoms may point to a fluid, control, torque-converter, or internal transmission problem.

At Driven Auto Care of Fremont, CA, we serve Sunol drivers from our Fremont shop. Our transmission services include diagnosis, repair, replacement, rebuilds, fluid service, and related drivetrain work. We inspect the system before recommending a major repair.

Harsh or Delayed Shifts Need Diagnosis

A hard shift between gears or a noticeable delay before the Explorer moves can come from more than one source. Low or deteriorated fluid, electronic control problems, valve-body issues, or internal wear may all affect shift quality.

Ford's owner information says the fluid level should be checked if the transmission slips or shifts slowly. We also scan the powertrain system for stored faults and compare those results with how the vehicle behaves on the road. A code gives us direction, but testing gives us the answer.

Shuddering Can Point to Torque-Converter Trouble

Some 2016–2019 Explorers equipped with the 2.3-liter engine and 6F35 transmission were included in a Ford customer satisfaction program addressing torque-converter concerns. Ford identified symptoms including vibration, rough idle in Drive or Reverse, sluggish acceleration from a stop, and shudder while driving.

This does not mean every 2018 Explorer has the same problem—engine and transmission configuration matter. If your Explorer shudders, we confirm whether the transmission causes the symptom before recommending internal work.

Fluid Leaks Should Not Be Ignored

Transmission fluid is essential for lubrication, hydraulic pressure, cooling, and proper gear engagement. Ford notes that the transmission does not normally consume fluid, so any visible leakage warrants inspection.

A small leak may begin around a seal, gasket, cooler line, or another connection. Continuing to drive while the fluid level drops may result in poor shifting and further internal damage. We locate the leak first, rather than simply topping off the fluid and sending the vehicle back out.

Not Every Shift Problem Means Replacement

Transmission symptoms can feel severe even when the final repair is more limited. A wiring fault, sensor issue, control problem, fluid concern, or valve-body problem may produce shifting complaints without requiring a complete transmission replacement.

Our Fremont transmission page emphasizes diagnosis before repair. We check fluid condition, scan data, road-test behavior, leaks, and related drivetrain components before deciding what the Explorer actually needs.

Repair May Range From Service to Internal Work

Once the cause is confirmed, the repair depends on the test results. Some vehicles may need fluid service or leak repair. Others may require control-system work, torque-converter service, internal transmission repair, a rebuild, or replacement.

Driven Auto Care offers transmission repair, replacement, rebuilds, fluid flushes, and related drivetrain services in Fremont. The right repair is the one supported by the diagnosis.
