SYNOPSIS: This article covers where the 2017 Acura MDX tends to leak coolant, how to spot the source, and where to get it fixed in Fremont, CA.

Tracing a Coolant Leak on the 2017 Acura MDX

You find a little puddle under the front of the MDX. Orange, maybe green, sitting where the nose of the car parks. First thought is the one everybody has is that it is small. The car drives fine. Gauge looks normal. Deal with it later.

That is how coolant leaks get expensive. They stay small for a while, you top off the reservoir every couple of weeks, and then one ordinary Tuesday, the system runs dry on you. Now you are on the shoulder of Mission with the needle pinned, calling a tow instead of driving in when it was a cheap hose.

The puddle shows up by the radiator. Most people get that part right. Where it goes sideways is figuring the radiator must be what broke. There is a whole cluster of parts packed into that front corner, and any of them can be the one letting go.

The Radiator Itself

The 2017 MDX has a plastic-and-aluminum radiator, and those plastic end tanks are a known soft spot. Heat cycle them for enough years and the plastic goes brittle, then cracks along a seam. You get a slow weep that runs down and drips off the bottom. A lot of times, you can spot dried crusty residue on the radiator before anything ever hits the ground. Once that plastic splits, it only gets worse.

Radiator Hoses and Clamps

Rubber gives up eventually. The upper and lower hoses live in the heat and harden over the years, cracking at the bends where they flex. The clamps loosen and corrode too. Cold engine, run your hand down the hoses. Anything damp or soft or swollen is about done. This is the version you want. A hose and a clamp is cheap, and you are back on the road same day.

The Water Pump and Thermostat Housing

Here is where people talk themselves into the wrong repair. The water pump has a little weep hole, and as the seal wears, it starts to drip. The thermostat housing gasket does the same. Both sit close enough that the coolant lands near the radiator, so you see the puddle, look straight up, and blame a radiator that was never leaking. The puddle tells you where the coolant landed, not always where it got out.

The Coolant Reservoir and Cap

A couple of small parts nobody checks. The plastic overflow reservoir can crack at a seam. And the cap. A worn radiator cap quits sealing and lets coolant push out under pressure. It is sneaky for another reason, too. A bad cap lets the system bleed off pressure, and that makes the engine run hotter than it should.
