Discussion of Key Aspects of Leadership Development
Business executives often have many useful skills which help them succeed in corporate positions of power. In order to be a successful executive, one must understand their business, be a great strategic planner, make quick decisions and be an effective leader of people.
All these skills are important, but leadership is essential as an executive because an entire department or company looks to you for guidance. The best executives understand their learning never stops, and partnering with an executive coach can help them thrive, personally and professionally.
As a business coach located in South Florida, I have worked with companies of all sizes and industries and the executives in those companies to help them reach their goals. Executive coaching is one of my favorite services I offer because the goal is to help an executive be the best version of themselves through skills training, personal development and mapping out their ideal career path.
While each executive coaching session is different depending on the needs, challenges and career status of my client, almost all of them request some form of leadership training. As an executive, you are the conduit between ownership’s goals and the employees on the ground making them happen. While you must plan the ideal strategy to meet those goals as an executive, nothing will get done if you aren’t an effective leader.
In my leadership training, we focus on three main skills which help a leader thrive. Below, you will find an overview of those three skills and why they’re important in a leadership role.
Communication: A leader must clearly and effectively communicate with each member of their team. By letting them know exactly what their role is, how their job impacts others and the company as a whole and setting clear expectations, you give them the best chance of success in their job.
Delegation: No executive can handle every job in their department on their own. If they try, they will get burned out and the company will suffer. Instead, a leader must know when to delegate and more importantly, must equip their team for success with delegated tasks. A leader who can delegate and verify the work is done after the fact, while still being available if someone has a need, can focus on the big picture and drive positive results.
Motivation: Leaders must not only delegate tasks and clearly communicate expectations, they have to ensure people are motivated to work at their peak performance levels for ideal results. Effective leaders understand people are motivated by different things, and can lead people according to the style which best suits them. If a leader can learn about their people and know their “why,” it becomes easier to motivate them and push them to perform in their professional lives.
