In my role as an executive business coach based in Melbourne, Florida, I provide customized leadership training for managers, directors, and executives across various industries. Companies seek out my expertise as a FocalPoint coach to develop the capabilities of their leaders with the goal of improving team performance and organizational results.
I find that many leaders have common questions about the coaching process and how it can benefit them. Here I’ll address some frequently asked questions to give you a better understanding of my leadership training:
How is coaching different than typical professional training?
In traditional training programs, the emphasis is on the trainer sharing their knowledge and expertise through instruction and presentation. Coaching is more collaborative; the coach's role is to ask thoughtful questions to draw out the leader's innate strengths and guide them through developing new capabilities. It's a one-on-one, personalized approach.
What does the coaching process look like?
The coaching process starts with identifying development goals based on the needs of the leader and their organization. I then work closely with each leader to establish an actionable development plan. Coaching sessions involve reflective discussions, assessments, planning, skill-building, roleplaying, and identifying on-the-job application. Leaders are accountable for applying what they learn. I provide prompt feedback and adjustment recommendations to drive growth.
What areas can you help leaders develop?
My leadership training expertise covers a wide range of competencies such as strategic thinking, decision-making, influence, delegation, coaching subordinates, conflict management, team building, change leadership and more. The training plan we create will focus on the specific skills each leader needs to improve.
How is training customized for the individual?
While some fundamentals of good leadership are universal, each leader's development demands are unique. Through my initial assessment, I tailor the approach to focus on the specific growth areas for that individual. Some leaders may need more relationship-building work, while others need to improve strategic planning capabilities. I personalize the training accordingly.
Why is developing self-awareness important?
Understanding one's own strengths, development areas, motivations and tendencies is crucial for leadership growth. Our coaching work includes various self-awareness assessments and discussions to expand the leader's insight into themselves and how they impact others. This provides an essential foundation upon which we build new skills.
Do you provide coaching for developing specific skills?
Absolutely. For example, presentations are a frequent area leaders want to improve. We may videotape them delivering a presentation, then I would provide concrete feedback on elements like structure, delivery, visuals and handling Q&A. For each targeted skill, I incorporate activities to practice and receive coaching.
How is leadership training reinforced?
The ongoing coaching relationship helps reinforce the training. Leaders put their skills into practice within their roles, then we debrief on what's working well versus areas needing more attention. Adjustments keep the learning on track. Peer coaching with other leaders accelerates learning through shared experiences.
How do you measure success of the training?
We establish clear success measures up front based on the individual's development goals and link those to business outcomes. Common metrics include leader effectiveness ratings, project success, employee retention and engagement, and productivity gains. I build leaders' capability to self-monitor as well. Periodic assessments quantify progress and sustain accountability.
How much time does the training take?
This depends on the breadth of development needs and how quickly the leader integrates new capabilities. Some achieve proficiency in certain focus areas within a few months. More comprehensive development plans may take 6-12 months. Deepened self-awareness and forming new work habits take time, but generate enormous benefits.
What is the leader's role in their development?
A growth mindset and commitment to the coaching process is critical. While I provide structure, guidance and support, the leader must be willing to examine their own behaviors honestly, try new approaches and devote time to practice. Leaders who embrace this active role progress faster.
These are just a few frequently asked questions about my executive coaching programs. My purpose is to create meaningful and sustainable growth in each leader I partner with, ultimately benefiting their teams and organizations. Development takes commitment but delivering positive impact makes the effort worthwhile.
