When it comes to your car’s performance and economy, frequent oil changes are a must in the BMW and Mini Cooper. When it comes to changing your car’s oil, you may question whether you can do it yourself. The good news is you can. Here are a few oil changing tips for you:
Verify That the Oil and Filter Are Correct
To get started, you’ll need to get your hands on the correct oil and filter. You can verify your car’s oil requirements by consulting your owner’s handbook, or by visiting the service facility at your local BMW and Mini Cooper dealership. Make sure you know whether you’ll be using standard or hybrid oil before you begin. Oil filter wrenches, pans, and funnels are also required. Latex gloves and automobile jacks are also required.
Warm Up Your Car
The best way to get things moving is to crank up your vehicle and let it race for a few minutes until it feels comfortable to touch. Take a few minutes to let your engine cool down.
Find the Drain Plug
Under the oil pan, search for a stopper. That’s where the drain stopper goes. It’s possible that you’ll also have to lift your vehicle at this stage. If you do, be sure you’re utilizing jack stands that are strong enough.
Drain the Oil
Unscrew the drain cap by placing a container beneath it; you may need a tool for this. To avoid getting your hands greasy, have a cloth handy. The oil will drain into the receptacle once it’s opened, so go ahead and do it.
Remove the Oil Filter
When your oil is pouring, replace your oil filter. At the front of your engine, you will locate the oil filter. Unscrew the filter after removing the cap; there will be oil on it, so take care not to spill it. Before inserting the new filter, wet the gasket on top with your new oil.
Pour New Oil
Pour all but one quart of the fresh oil into the oil fill hole using a funnel. Before starting the engine and running it for 60 seconds, let the oil drain for a few minutes. Let your car cool down for a few minutes before starting it up again.
Check the Level of Oil
Using a cloth, remove the probe and wipe it down. Check the oil level by replacing and removing the filter. If the full line on your dipstick has not yet been reached, continue filling up till it shows a green light.
