Cowlicks can be quite a challenge for many hairstyles. It often creates a problem for the hairstylist to create a new look. Here’s an easy technique to help you lessen or eliminate your cowlick. Below are some great techniques I’ve learned in my experience and years of styling hair that I’d like to share with you.
After you wash your hair and comb out the tangles, flip your head upside down. Using your fingertips, gently “scrub” the scalp at the crown of the head in a circle. Don’t pull your hair out. Just gently move the hair around. It’s like you are shaking out your hair at the roots!
Focus on moving your hair at the cowlick in new directions so it develops a “new memory.” Scrubbing your hair at the roots will allow your hair the freedom to fall in different positions. This keeps it from always going back to the same spot. You’re giving your hair movement instead of just letting it fall back into the same old spot.
Now bring in your hair dryer. Blow straight down the hair shaft — using the hair dryer almost like an iron. This will squash the front cowlick. After your hair is mostly dry, you can add styling touches with your brushes. Just keep moving the hair at the cowlick.
Once dry, lift your hair from underneath to spray with hairspray. This helps to lighten the hair at the cowlick so it doesn’t get weighed down. This should diminish the cowlick and help it stay in a new place!
