Backstroke is an enjoyable and confidence-gaining skill once the child feels at ease in the water. Beginner backstroke lessons at Swim Academy are tailored for the child who already knows how to float and kick. These students are ready to extend what they know, learn a new swim stroke, and develop greater body control in the water.
Our backstroke lessons are designed to instruct body position, timing, and arm action in a relaxed, encouraging environment. Although the backstroke does take getting used to, the swimmers work gradually towards it, starting with kicking drills and building to full-stroke coordination with plenty of encouragement in between.
Why Backstroke Is Important For Beginners
Backstroke teaches kids to move in the water facing upwards, something that feels new but is an essential element of swim development. It develops core strength, rhythm, and coordination. It also teaches the swimmer how to move efficiently but remain relaxed, which aids with the other strokes as well.
Learning the backstroke enables young swimmers to become more well-rounded. They become confident as they build a strong kick and consistent arm motion, along with improved breathing and balance control. We emphasize technique at the beginning so the swimmers develop good habits early on and never need to unlearn them.
What To Expect In A Beginner Backstroke Class
Our coaches start with back floating and flutter kick drills to get the swimmers comfortable on their backs. Then, we introduce the arm movement and timing and instruct the swimmers to rotate through the stroke and breathe rhythmically.
Our small class sizes provide every swimmer with the personalized attention that is so important. We keep lessons fun, laid-back, and achievement-oriented. We give instant feedback. This is alongside clear, powerful techniques to guide kids through each section of the stroke to help them learn quickly.
Who Can Participate In These Lessons
Beginning backstroke lessons are available to kids who are already safe in the water and who have completed the basic learn-to-swim course. They need to be able to float on their backs well, kick on a board, and swim through the water on their own.
If the child is still developing these skills, we suggest beginning with our beginner or Tiny Tots lessons to develop the foundation. Backstroke will be the next thrilling stage in the child’s swim career once ready.
