How to Choose a Banner, Materials, and Finishes

BY: ,
With fall right around the corner, many organizations are planning their annual parades. To make sure the parade is a success; careful planning is essential. One of the most important aspects of planning a parade is the signs, and banners are one of the most common types of signs seen at parades. How Banners are Used in Parades
  • To lead the parade and set the tone
  • To draw attention to a float and a marching group
  • To advertise the parade's sponsors
  • As an inexpensive way to decorate the parade route
Let's take a close look at some of the different types of banner sign products and how they are made. Types of Banners
  • Vinyl banners are made of a durable polyester material designed to withstand both tears and weathering. They are printed on one or both sides. These are best for holding on the parade route as they can be finished with pole sleeves. These allow for the poles to hold the banner while it is carried.
  • Perforated banners are made of light polyester fabric and have holes throughout. This allows wind and light to pass through. These work well for parades on windy days.
  • Mesh banners are made of vinyl material with thousands of micro-perforations. Unlike perforated banners, these holes a very small. This allows air to flow through. Mesh banners are perfect for hanging on fences which section off the parade route.
  • Banner stands are freestanding structures designed to support a banner if it cannot be hung from a structure. They are the perfect product for indoor activities and under pop-up tents.
  • Retractable banners are similar to banner stands but roll up into the base for easy storage and transportation.
  • Step and repeat banners are a backdrop with a repeated image printed, typically logos. They are designed as backgrounds for photos, trade show displays, and “red carpet” style events without distracting from the foreground. They make for a great photo opportunity at the end of parades.
Types of Banner Finishes The final touches on a banner are known as banner finishes. These finishes improve the overall appearance of the banner creating a professional finished look. There are three types of banner finishes:
  • Hemmed: The most common type of banner finish where the four edges of the banner are folded over and sewn.
  • Grommets: Metal rings are placed along the banner’s edges and in each of the four corners for hanging.
  • Pole pockets: A pole may be inserted into the top and bottom of the banner with the addition of the sleeve.
