Plastic, Aluminum, and Cardboard Yard Signs

Yard signs are a great way to promote businesses, products, services, and events. But what kind of material is the best choice?

Corrugated Plastic

Corrugated plastic is a lightweight, durable material frequently used for making yard signs. It is made of two layers of plastic with a third corrugated layer sandwiched in-between. This makes it sturdy enough to withstand wind and weather and light enough to be portable.

Corrugated plastic is one of the most popular choices for yard signs because it is versatile. It is easier to cut into shapes than denser substrates. Plus, corrugated plastic is easy to recycle, making it an environmentally friendly sign product choice.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of corrugated plastic is its low cost. Corrugated plastic is a great value when comparing the price against durability, especially when yard signs are purchased in bulk.

Disadvantages of corrugated plastic include its limited lifespan (it will eventually fade and crack) and it is not as sturdy as other material options.

Aluminum

Aluminum is a strong, durable material. An aluminum sign can be fabricated from a solid sheet of aluminum, or a composite material made of aluminum with a polyethylene core. Both products are sturdier than plastic and last much longer. Aluminum signs are often used for long-term projects like construction sites, traffic signs, and real estate developments.

The biggest advantage of aluminum for signage is its durability. Aluminum signs will not fade, crack, or peel over time. They can also be printed on both sides.

The downside of aluminum signs is their upfront cost. However, when the signs lifespan is considered, they may be more cost-effective in the long run.

Corrugated Cardboard

Like plastic yard signs, corrugated cardboard is made of two layers with a third layer of corrugations (ridges) in-between. Cardboard is more environmentally friendly than plastic but is also not nearly as durable. However, a coating can be added to the cardboard to offset this lack of durability. It is typically a poly-coating or laminate coating.

Cardboard signs are the most economical option, but they will not last very long. Also, they can be recycled, which is good for the environment. And they can be printed on both sides for maximum visibility.

Which Material is Best?

The biggest factor to consider is the intended lifespan. If the signs need to last for years, aluminum would be the best option. However, if the sign needs to be in place only a few months or weeks, then plastic and cardboard are better choices.

Another factor to consider is the environment. Like most residents in Sacramento, eco-friendly products are a big concern. Luckily, cardboard, plastic and aluminum can all be recycled. Keep in mind where you live as it may be easier to recycle paper than aluminum.

The last factor to consider is cost. As mentioned, aluminum signs have a higher upfront cost, but they will last much longer than plastic and cardboard.
