Construction site safety is important to protect both workers and the public. Posting the proper signs at construction sites is one way to help guarantee safety. These signs are mandated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and must be posted throughout the construction site.

Signs Required at Entrances of Construction Sites

  • A sign identifying the name and address of the general contractor. It must also include the permit number issued by the County.
  • A sign identifying the name, address, and telephone number of the person to contact in case of emergencies.
  • A sign warning the public of the dangers associated with construction work.
  • A sign prohibiting parking in a fire lane.
  • If the construction site is in a residential area, a sign indicating the hours of operation for construction work.

In addition to the above, signs may also be required to:

  • Warn the public not to trespass on the site
  • Prohibit loitering
  • Prohibit the use of firearms
  • Prohibit the use of alcohol and drugs

Signs Required Inside the Construction Site

Danger signs identify the most serious hazards where death, or substantial injury, is certain, and special measures must be observed. “Danger” is printed in white letters on a red background, with an exclamation point inside a triangle.

Warning signs are placed in areas where a hazard could potentially result in death or serious damage, but not to the extent where a danger sign would be necessary. “Warning” is printed on an orange background and preceded by a safety alert symbol.

Caution signs are installed where minor or moderate injuries are possible. “Caution” is printed in black on a yellow background, with the safety alert symbol following it.

Notice signs give people information about their surroundings. They can provide instructions on how to use a machine, the rules for a certain area, and maintenance instructions.

Admittance signs are placed in restricted areas to warn people of the dangers and consequences of entering.

Fire safety signs indicate the location of emergency firefighting gear and fire exits.

Emergency exit signs must be placed in all buildings to indicate the location of emergency exits. These signs must be easy to see and understand in an emergency.

First aid signs are placed in areas where first aid supplies are located. These signs help to assure people know where to find these supplies in the event of an accident or injury.

Speed limit signs remind people of a particular area’s maximum safe speed limit.

Stop signs are placed at intersections and other locations to remind people to stop their vehicles before proceeding.

Yield signs remind drivers they must yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic.

No parking signs remind drivers they are not allowed to park their vehicles in a particular area.
