Custom Lighted Signs for Increased Visibility

BY: ,

Lighted signs are one of the best ways to attract attention. However, many kinds of lighted signs exist and deciding which is right for your business can seem confusing. Here is a breakdown of lighted signs to help make the choice easy.

Channel Letter Signs

Channel letter signs are three-dimensional letters often used as storefront signs. They are made by bending aluminum or another substrate (material) into the shape of a letter (return) and then attaching it to a mounting plate. The face of the letter is covered with a translucent or opaque panel depending on the lighting style desired.

Back-lit signs have an open back and closed front to allow the light to shine out the back and reflect on the building. This gives the sign a "halo," hence the alternate name "halo-lit" signs. Front-lit letters have a closed back, which allows the light to shine through the translucent front panel.

Regardless of the lighting style, a channel to house the lighting and wiring is made on the back of the letter. This "channel" is what gives this style of sign its name.

Lightbox Sign

Lightbox signs usually contain an inner light, mostly fluorescent or LED, and outer panels with graphics such as a business logo, name, and other relevant brand information. When the light is switched on, it shines through the translucent panels and lights up the sign, illuminating the graphics.

Lightbox signs are typically mounted on a wall, hung from a ceiling, and placed on the ground (freestanding). These signs are popular with businesses who need a straightforward sign visible at night, such as 24-hour businesses, restaurants, and hotels.

Neon Signs

Neon signs are composed of glass tubes filled with gas (usually neon, argon, or krypton) and sealed. The gas is electrically charged and glows when turned on. While they are not as common as they used to be, neon signs can still be found in many places and provide a touch of nostalgia. However, they are also fragile and require more maintenance than other types of signs.

Monument Signs

Monument signs are large, free-standing signs usually located in front of a business and on the side of a road. They are typically used for businesses such as car dealerships, schools, churches, and hospitals. Monument signs are made from various materials, including brick, stone, stucco, wood, metal, and glass. They can be lit from the front, back, and sides via LEDs and floodlights.

Pole Signs

Pole signs are large signs attached to a pole as the name suggests. They are often used for businesses on highways, such as gas stations, restaurants, and hotels. Pole signs are made from various materials, including metal, wood, plastic, and fiberglass.
