Did you know that your business is required to post ADA signs if you have any kind of customers or walk-in traffic?
ADA signs are various types of signs that are designed to help disabled people in public places or businesses. ADA stands for Americans with Disabilities Act, and was put into place in 1990 by the federal government. Businesses that don’t comply, or aren’t ADA compliant, face the potential penalty of up to or more than $50,000.
There are all different types of ADA signs, from wheelchair accessible bathroom signs to parking lot signs. They are typically durable signs that hold up well in public places. Most of the time the sign faces are non-glare, making them easier to read. The only exception to the rule are parking signs, which have reflective faces that help to reflect light, making them easier to see at night. They are typically made of weather resistant lightweight aluminum material, and can even include reflective text and images on the parking signs to further improve visibility at night.
The signs with the image of the wheelchair and the word “Handicapped” will be a thing of the past. A new law in N.Y. signed by Gov. Cuomo does away with the old style signs and mandates the changing of the wording from “Handicapped” to “accessible”. The old image of a wheelchair bound character is replaced with a sign showing the wheelchair in motion to be used on ramps and parking spaces.
We are a full-service custom signs and graphic design company, and one of the many services that we offer is ADA compliance and custom ADA signage. Most ADA signs look the same or very similar, and can be produced fairly inexpensively. But we can also create custom ADA signs from various types of material to help your business stand out, or create more of a high-end professional look.
If you have any questions about signs of any kind, we would be more than happy to help.
