“Window Perf”, short for perforated window film, is an optical illusion. The popular window covering allows a clear view of the outside from inside a retail space or a vehicle, but from the outside, an observer sees a window-wide view of vibrant, colorful, eye-catching graphics.
What is perforated material? Its any material with a series of small holes punched in it. The perforations let light in while the graphics printed on the remaining material stay clear. To adhere to windows, perforated window film has a black sticky side designed to trick the inside observer’s eye into seeing only what’s happening outside. What’s cool about window perf is the deception that occurs when an outside passer-by sees the graphics printed on the film that covers only 50% of the window. The brain fills in the holes, making the graphics appear solid.
Factors to consider with window perf:
- Larger text is highly recommended when working with perforated material. Our material manufacturer recommends using a font size of 30 or larger.
- Use bright vivid colors. You DO NOT want your window perf to have wide spaces of only dark colors. Our eyes naturally focus on the brighter colors, whereas we tend to focus through darker colors.
- Make sure your window perf gets plenty of lighting. Window perf graphics work best when there is more light on the printed side.
- When you’re creating the image, it’s a good idea to add 10% to 20% more contrast that you would to a normal image. The additional contrast helps to compensate for that loss and will make the graphics look normal once they’re applied.
