Most business owners often struggle with one of these four challenges.
The first one is time: their business is running them more than they’re really running their business – and anytime I hear about somebody who’s working consistently 50 hours or more in their business, that’s problematic to me for a couple of reasons.
The first is that you’re probably not really running a healthy, marketable business: and any business that’s healthy is one that can be sold. So the business is probably dependent on that owner working that many hours and so the solution is there needs to be some additional processes, structure, and teams put in place to reduce the amount of dependency that the business has on the owner that’s taking all of their time.
The second issue a lot of business owners will face is with talent and teams. So that can look like a culture where people don’t want to embrace change and they resist doing things differently. It also can include talent attraction and talent retention, so there needs to be more structure put in place into how they develop and attract people and have a healthy culture.
The third issue a lot of business owners face is around finance. They maybe have timely financial reporting – and they need that – and even if they have that timely financial reporting, they are not exactly sure how to read the statements or even how to project those going forward into the future and developing goals for, let’s say the next year, and what financial success should look like for them.
The fourth problem is exit: they don’t know what it looks like for them to be able to exit their business. So there’s a process that can be done to help facilitate that: part of that is reducing the dependency of the business on the owner – this goes back to reducing their time spent on the business – so that they have more free time to think about what does the right exit look like for them. Both for the success of the business in the next season, but also their own purpose and identity after exiting the business.
So those are four common problems: issues around too much time in the business, issues with team and talent, finance, and finally, the exit. The good news is we can work through all four of those.
