Mold is a natural yet harmful problem.

Mold occurs when organic matter naturally decomposes in nature. While it is a part of our ecosystem, it becomes highly dangerous and problematic when it grows undetected around our house. Mold releases harmful molecules that cause respiratory issues when we inhale it.

It’s almost impossible to prevent the activation of mold spores, but it is possible to prevent it from growing. Mold spores require a damp, moist environment to activate. It feeds on organic matter present in its surroundings. The following are the steps to prevent mold spores from growing and spreading in your house.

Keep a Check on the Signs

Mold spores are not always visible. They are also difficult to detect around your house unless you keep a regular check, which may also be practically impossible as mold can grow anywhere. The most you can do as a homeowner is keep a check on the signs of mold growth. The most obvious sign is an unpleasant odor.

Another sign is when people living in the house feel like they are breathing stale or damp air. Early signs of mold-related health issues are difficulty in breathing, runny nose, sore throat, red eyes, etc. Any such unusual and unexplainable problems are a sign of mold growth inside the house.

Prevent Moisture

Mold spores develop in moist environments. Hence, to prevent mold, ensure proper ventilation to prevent moisture build-up. Many daily routine activities may lead to moisture build-up around our house such as taking a shower, cooking dinner, or doing laundry. If there is no proper ventilation, the moisture is trapped, encouraging mold growth. One way to prevent moisture is by opening windows when cooking or installing an exhaust fan or dehumidifier in the bathroom.

Dry Wet Areas Immediately

Another way to prevent mold growth is by drying up wet areas immediately. Any kind of seepage or leakage, which can be a result of rainfall or water damage, may cause mold spores to activate. All affected areas and materials should be dried up within 24-48 hours.

Don’t leave bathroom walls or floors wet after a shower as that enhances mold growth. Also, don’t leave wet clothes in the washing machine or in a basket for too long.

Use Mold-Resistant Products

Mold-resistant products are widely available today to prevent mold growth in houses. Moisture-resistant drywalls can be used in the vulnerable rooms of your home such as bathrooms and kitchens. Furthermore, mold-resistant paint and sheetrock are also used to make the surface highly water and moisture-resistant.

Call a Professional

The wisest thing to do to take care of this natural phenomenon is to call a professional mold testing and remediation company. The professionals test, detect, and prevent mold growth from spreading. They also clean-up and remove mold from anywhere in the house.
