Water Damage Prevention Tip
Shut Off Your Water Supply During Vacations
Water damage repairs to homes, businesses and other properties can be very expensive.
If possible, it’s best to avoid the water damage in the first place, and prevent it from ever occurring.
In this quick article, we’re covering one way that you can help prevent water damage. The easy task of shutting your main water supply off when you leave your home or business.
Whether on vacation or out of town for business, if you are going to be away for an extended amount of time, we recommend shutting off your main water supply.
If something were to happen, like a water line were to leak or burst somehow, water would start flowing into your home or business. If you don’t shut off the main water supply, water will keep spilling into your house or property. This can cause a tremendous amount of damage and flood your entire property if you are gone for a long time.
Water Damage Disaster Can Easily Be Avoided.
Turning off the main water supply to your property will prevent an unlimited water supply from draining into your home or business, in the event of a pipe or supply line failure. The longer you are away, the longer the water will continue to spill and wreak havoc to your floors, walls and valuables.
If your main water supply has been turned off, it still may not prevent water damage completely. Some water could still spill into your home or business, but by having the main water supply turned off, the water will not keep flowing. Only the water remaining in the lines could potentially drain into the home or business.
Where you live will dictate where your main water shut-off valve is located. If you live in a colder climate, the main water supply valve should be located in your basement, most likely near the front part of your house. If you live in a warmer climate, the main water supply valve might be located outside your home or building or in your garage. It should be attached to an outside wall, or somewhere near your building in an underground box that has a removable lid.
