Arizona has allowed permitless (constitutional) carry since 2010, which means most adults who can lawfully possess a firearm may carry concealed without a permit. Even so, the state’s CCW program remains in place and offers advantages that matter once you leave Arizona—or when specific locations and purchases are involved.
Why get a permit if Arizona is permitless?
Two big reasons. First, reciprocity: many other states recognize Arizona’s CCW, so your ability to carry while traveling often depends on holding a permit and following that state’s rules. Second, streamlined purchases: Under federal law, a qualifying carry permit can serve as your background check exemption at the point of sale (your dealer will confirm eligibility).
Restaurants that serve alcohol
Arizona law allows concealed carry in on-premises alcohol establishments if you hold a CCW permit, the business isn’t posted against weapons, and you do not consume alcohol. If a compliant sign is posted, you must not enter with a firearm, permit or not. When in doubt, look for the signage and ask staff.
Places you still can’t carry
Some locations remain off-limits, regardless of a permit, including K-12 school grounds (with narrow exceptions), polling places on Election Day, certain secured public buildings, and posted private property. Federal facilities have their own restrictions. Always check the signs at the door and the most current rules before entering.
How the Arizona CCW process works
The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) administers the program and runs background checks through its Concealed Weapons Permit Unit. You submit an application packet with the required documentation and fingerprints; processing typically takes several weeks once the DPS has received all the necessary information. You can start the official application online and contact the CWPU with questions.
Training that actually helps
A solid class clarifies the law and sharpens safe carry habits. C2 Tactical of Phoenix offers CCW courses (with application support), as well as private lessons, small-group training, and simulator sessions to build skills before or after live-fire training. If you’re new, consider taking a private lesson first; if you’re returning, use the simulator to refresh your judgment and fundamentals, then validate your skills on the range.
Smart carry tips from the range
- Know your route: crossing state lines? Check current reciprocity before you travel and obey local posting laws.
- Mind the signs & no-alcohol rule: posted businesses and consumption prohibitions are enforced—don’t risk it.
- Continue building competence by practicing dry firing at home (in a safe and unloaded state), then confirming your progress on paper at the range.
- Document your training: note drills, distances, and group sizes so improvement is visible over time.
- Refresh the legal side: revisit AZDPS resources annually; laws and reciprocity lists are subject to change.
Your next step
If you live in or around Surprise, plan a straightforward path: book a CCW class to cover the legal essentials and application, add a private lesson to refine safe handling and accuracy, and use the simulator for high-repetition reps before live fire. Check C2 Tactical’s CCW page and training calendar to reserve your spot, then carry confidently—and responsibly—where the law allows.
