The Importance of Defining Your Vision

As a certified master business and executive coach in Phoenix, I work with many franchise owners who feel overwhelmed trying to juggle all the aspects of running their business. Luckily, with some time management discipline, you can optimize how you spend your hours to grow at the pace you want efficiently.

The first step is to get clear on your big-picture vision – where do you want your franchise to be in the next 3-5 years? Do you want to open more locations or maximize sales at your current spots? This vision will dictate what you need to focus your limited time on. As a business coach for over 20 years in Phoenix and beyond, I’ve found too many franchise owners get stuck in the weeds of daily minutiae instead of working towards their larger goals.

Map Out Key Priorities in a Master Calendar

Once your vision is set, break down what needs to be accomplished quarterly and monthly to reach it. For most franchises, this includes marketing campaigns to increase new customer acquisition, developing ongoing incentives to boost loyalty among existing customers, training and incentivizing your employees to provide better service, understanding your operational budgets, and staying up-to-date with corporate mandates.

Many of my clients rely too heavily on memory to keep all these balls in the air, leading to dropped tasks and lost opportunities. Carving out time for special projects, like dreaming up a big re-opening bash, and the must-dos that come around every week, such as team catch-ups, is essential.

Leverage Technology to Help You Stick to the Schedule

Technology can be immensely helpful to stick to your calendar. Most smartphones allow you to set appointment notifications, sync your calendar across devices, and share agendas with your team. However, you need the discipline actually to adhere to the schedule you’ve created. I teach my clients to view their calendars as sacred, not just a loose suggestion of how they should spend their time.

Protect Time for Strategic Thinking

Another common pitfall I see with Phoenix franchises is letting busywork dominate their schedule, leaving little time for strategic growth activities. As a business owner, only you can look at the franchise holistically to spot new opportunities worth pursuing. This is why you must prioritize open blocks of 1-2 hours daily, where you can analyze sales reports, research competitor moves or industry trends, brainstorm new marketing ideas with your team, or think deeply about your long-term vision.

I advise fiercely protecting this open time and not allowing non-essential meetings, phone calls, or email replies to impede this time to work “on” the franchise, not just “in” it. As skilled a multitasker as you may be, real strategic thinking requires sustained focus without distractions pulling you in multiple directions.

Schedule Time Wisely for Growth

As a business coach, I firmly believe the old maxim, “What gets scheduled gets done.” Too often, franchise owners have great intentions but fail to actualize them because they don’t purposefully build the actions to lead to growth in their calendars. By planning your time wisely around both necessary daily responsibilities and higher-leveraged activities to spur expansion, you can strike the right balance to take your Phoenix franchise where you want it to go.
