A Legacy of Spiritual Growth
Back in 1943, after hearing Dr. Ernest Holmes speak, the mind behind Religious Science, Daisy Mae Beckett, sparked what would blossom into today’s Oakland Center for Spiritual Living. It all started in a cozy basement space on Montecito Street, where a devoted few gathered around the principles of the Science of Mind. In a matter of just a few years, the group took on a new identity as the Institute of Religious Science and Philosophy, becoming known as the Oakland First Church, and marked its place as an official center for spiritual activities.
Thanks to the hard work and vision of early trailblazers such as Rev. Beckett, followed by influential figures like Dr. Lillian Hopper, the center saw remarkable growth. It expanded into bigger locations before finally settling down at its forever address on Clarewood Drive in 1963. With each passing year, the OCSL community became a shining example for the East Bay. It became a source of hope and learning and a place where many people found a sense of connection.
Community and Connection Through the Decades
OCSL stands out for its dedication to building a place where everyone feels at home. Since its inception, the center has welcomed a wide range of people, showcasing the belief in the Science of Mind that we all embody the Divine. The center owes its lasting success to the welcoming atmosphere that has drawn in a diverse group of spiritual explorers, mentors, and guides.
As time has moved on, the center has stretched its offerings far and wide to embrace the changing demands of the people it serves. Through a spectrum ranging from spiritual teachings to hands-on workshops engaging the youth and embracing the joy of music ministries, OCSL has unwaveringly opened doors to both individual development and communal bonding. The Clarewood Singers, along with the Joy Choir and various musical projects, have brought depth to what the center offers, making sure that music stays at the heart of its spiritual journey.
Gazing Into The Future
While reflecting on our rich history, OCSL is also turning its gaze forward, filled with hope and anticipation. We are already on the path to growing our offerings, reaching out more, and strengthening our ties with the community.
