If you find yourself in a situation where your vehicle won't start, you are certainly not alone! This could very well be a sign of a major starting system problem. Have you ever had a hard start, where the engine takes longer than usual to crank? Perhaps it starts, only to stumble and stall, or worse—it doesn't crank at all. These symptoms suggest possible problems occurring with your fuel system and, more specifically, fuel pressure. Let's talk about diagnosing the problem. You have a vehicle where the engine just doesn't want to crank, or maybe it hesitates for a moment. The place to start would be looking at the fuel pressure: the fuel pump, the lines, and the filters. Taking these steps can help you identify the issue and get back on the road safely. The first thing you should check when diagnosing a possible fuel problem is your fuel pressures. You have to have a good functioning fuel pump sending unit. To begin this test, you will need an assistant to help you out. It is a very simple procedure and doesn't take any special equipment. Have your partner sit inside the vehicle. They should insert the key and turn it to the "on" position, but there's no need to crank the engine. What you’re trying to do here is listen for a very faint humming noise that indicates the fuel pump is operating. While they’re doing that, you will need to get safely underneath the vehicle, positioned near the fuel tank. Stay alert; your main task is listening closely to that humming sound. If you can't hear it while you're under the vehicle, don't panic. You can use your hand or a rubber mallet to gently tap on the bottom of the fuel tank. Sometimes, this can revive a sleepy pump. If the engine starts after this, great! You’ve managed to get the vehicle going, but it’s essential to realize this typically indicates you have an issue with the fuel pump sending module. This next step demands precision, so take your time. You will be testing the fuel pressure by pressing down on the valve in the center, which will release any built-up pressure. Be cautious, as gasoline might spurt out when you do this. If liquid fuel comes out, that’s a positive indication that fuel is making its way up to this point in the system. However, to fully assess the situation, you need to know how much pressure you actually have. If you have a fuel pressure gauge, now’s the time to attach it to the valve. This gauge will give you a reading of the fuel pressure. Familiarize yourself with the specifications for your specific vehicle, since acceptable fuel pressure typically ranges from 30 to 50 psi or slightly higher, depending on the application. Knowing the expected pressure is vital; if you discover that the fuel pressure is below specifications, this could very well be your problem, and the fuel pump assembly could be the culprit.

Poor Fuel Pressure As The Culprit

Poor fuel pressure can lead to various starting issues, like long cranking times before the engine finally starts or struggling to keep the engine running once it does. Common sources of these problems include a faulty fuel pressure regulator—often situated on the fuel pump assembly or the fuel rail—or even a clog, perhaps in the fuel filter. However, since you've already ruled out a leak, it's time to focus on these possibilities. If you find that there is fuel pressure in the engine but you’re still having trouble starting, be very cautious not to flood the engine. Your spark plugs do not perform well when drenched in fuel, and this can lead to further ignition issues. As you troubleshoot the situation, consider the possibility that you may not have heard any noise from the fuel pump assembly. This can be the next area you need to investigate. Stay focused and methodical in your approach, and you’ll be well on your way to diagnosing the issue at hand.

Check Electronics: Fuses, Connectors and Wires

While you're under the hood, let's take a minute and check the fuses. Most cars have a fuse box located under the hood. You could gently lift the cover off of the fuse box and take a look inside. Don't forget to consult the legend located underneath the fuse box to identify which one you're looking for. If you have trouble finding the fuse, you can take an extra minute to locate your owner's manual and pinpoint the fuse with the fuel pump. The fuel pump fuse is a pretty small one, so keep an eye out for that. You don't necessarily need a specialty tool to check this fuse. If you have a test light that can make things easier, it's a straightforward tool that's simple to use. However, if you don’t own one, you can still proceed by carefully pulling the fuse out and inspecting it visually. Check it for signs of damage—especially between the two prongs—if you find a break or any burn marks, that could very well be your culprit! Start by replacing the blown fuse with a new one, and then retest your fuel pump. If it works again, that's a good sign. But do make sure to investigate why that fuse blew in the first place. If you've checked that, indeed, you have power, yet the motor doesn't crank, then close the fuse box and proceed to step two—checking the wiring. Wires do get damaged or chewed on if the vehicle has been sitting around for a very long time or even while parked in some garage. Watch out for those rodents; sometimes, they love chewing on wiring where it is least accessible. Take a real close look at the wiring running from the fuse box down to the fuel pump. Check the wiring harness for any signs of wear, fraying, or chew marks. If everything looks good down to the fuel pump connector, your next step is to test for power at that connector. If you find that power is getting there but the fuel pump still won't work, it's time to install a new fuel pump assembly. After you're sure there's no problem with the power getting to the pump, you'll be well on your way to having your vehicle in working order once again.

Different Methods of Replacing a Fuel Pump Assembly

Once you have access, start detaching the lines from the top of the assembly and remove the assembly from inside the tank.
