Your engine generates titanic levels of heat when it's running, and coolant is the quiet hero that keeps it from boiling away. This lifeblood fluid runs through your car's cooling system, dissipating excess heat and cooling the temperature. Without enough coolant, your engine's in big trouble—tuning performance can become a full-blown mechanical disaster in an instant!   When the coolant is below normal, or the system is completely dry, you're essentially asking metal components whirring at thousands of revolutions per minute to endure furnace-like conditions. Symptoms of low coolant develop slowly, but damage can then occur overnight! Understanding how coolant works and learning the skills to detect problems early will save you from expensive repairs and roadside shocks.  

Learning How Coolant Functions in Your Engine

Your engine's cooling system is a closed loop that maintains temperatures in balance as your vehicle moves along. Your water pump is the heart of your system, forcing coolant along a maze of routes that make their way around your engine block and along cylinders upon which combustion occurs. With each stroke, your piston strokes up and down, generating hotspots, and your coolant absorbs the energy in the form of heat before it can damage expensive components.   This is what happens to coolants as they go through your engine:   Water Pump: The process starts as coolants are expelled from the water pump and into the engine block via specifically provided channels.   Engine Block: It moves around the cylinders, absorbing heat from metal walls.   Cylinder Head: The hot coolants then move through the cylinder head, acquiring even more heat energy from the combustion chambers. Heater Hoses: Heater hoses diverge from this circuit, in which a portion of the hot coolant passes through your car's heater core, so you get warmth during cold weather. Radiator: Once it has passed through the engine, the coolant is routed to the radiator at the front of your vehicle. Cooling Process: And there it goes. That is where the sorcery comes in: when air moves through the radiator fins (on driving or the cooling fan), heat is transferred from the coolant to the air. Return to Water Pump: The cooled fluid then returns to the water pump to begin all over again in a loop throughout the system. When your coolant runs low, all this unravels, exposing your engine to dangerous temperatures that will destroy it irreparably in minutes.  

Locating the Signs of Low or No Coolant in Your Engine

Your vehicle has a method of telling you when something is amiss—you simply have to be able to listen. When your coolant level runs low, your engine produces an entire catalog of warning signs that cannot be overlooked.

1. Warnings on the Temperature Gauge

Warning lights on your temperature gauge are often the first sign of trouble. When your temperature gauge dips into the red or lingers in the top of the gauge, your cooling system may be low on coolant. Fresh models even illuminate a warning message onto your dashboard to alert you to fill your coolant level immediately.  

2. Visible Coolant Leaks

Leakage of visible coolant is another warning sign. Check underneath your vehicle for drips of very colored liquid—most coolant is green, orange, pink, or yellow in color depending on the product type. You'll also see spills on your driveway or garage floor when you park your vehicle.  

3. Unusual Smells and Noises

Be on the lookout for strange smells and noises under your hood. That sweet, syrupy smell is usually what happens when coolant has burned up in some place that it shouldn't. If your heater or air conditioner just, out of nowhere, dies, this indicates that your climate control system is being ruined by a coolant problem.  

4. Steam Coming Out from Under Your Hood

Steam coming out from under your hood is a guaranteed indication that your engine is overheating because there's not enough coolant. You'll also notice your gas mileage declines considerably because your engine is running harder to make up for faulty temperature control. All these leak symptoms and low coolant symptoms should be diagnosed immediately to prevent expensive engine damage.  

The Risks of Running an Engine that Lacks Enough Coolant

Racing your engine low on coolant is, essentially, like requesting a desert marathon runner to go running without water; things are sure to go horribly wrong in a very short time. Once the coolant levels get critically too low, your engine's capacity for temperature control gets lost, giving way to a host of possible issues that may spell doom.  

1. Engine Overheating

The risk of engine overheating rises exponentially when the coolant is not permitted to move freely around the system. Your engine generates a lot of heat normally, and when it doesn't have sufficient coolant to take in and spread that heat, it becomes very quickly much too hot. The metal components begin to expand beyond their designed-to-be tolerances, and components meant to engage snugly together become warped and bent.  

2. Head Gasket Failure Due to Coolant Loss

The destruction doesn't stop at the surface level. Head gasket ruin due to lost coolant is among the most expensive repairs you'll ever have. Everything that counts for sealing is between your engine block and cylinder head, keeping compression and fluids where they belong. As soon as your cylinder head gets warped from excessive heat, the head gasket can burst and cause coolant to mix with engine oil or spill into the combustion chambers. You're seeing repair estimates that can readily exceed thousands of dollars.  

3. Warped Cylinder Heads and Cracked Engine Block

Warped cylinder heads create their own nightmare scenario. These precisely machined parts must have smooth surfaces like glass in order to seal correctly. Heat warping can make them useless, needing costly machining or even outright replacement. The engine block itself can crack with extreme heat stress, in effect writing off the powertrain on your vehicle.

Preventing Engine Damage by Maintaining Coolant

Having learned the severe dangers of low coolant while driving, let us now discuss ways in which you can safeguard your engine by way of intelligent coolant tips. Your cooling system requires equal consideration as you do for oil change and tire rotation.

Regular Inspections and Flushes

Inspect your coolant level every month when your engine is in good condition and cold. Your entire coolant system will require a flush at 30,000 miles or as recommended by your manufacturer. In a flush, the used coolant is flushed and exchanged for new fluid, which removes rust, scale, and debris that build up over time.  

Using the Right Coolant for Your Car

Your car must use a special type of coolant—not all combinations are created equal. Read your owner's manual to find out if you require:   Regular green coolant (ethylene glycol) Extended-life orange or yellow coolant (OAT) Hybrid organic acid technology coolant (HOAT) Mixing different coolants will produce a chemical reaction that reduces efficiency and even kill your cooling system components. Wrong installation of coolants will lead to corrosion of seals, gaskets, and metal components, which will produce leaks and system failure.  

Concentration Monitoring

Your cooling system should always be a 50/50 mixture of distilled water and antifreeze. This mixture provides maximum protection from freezing and overheat and prevents mineral deposits in tap water.
