A vehicle's brake system is very important for safe driving. Each time you press the brake pedal, you want to feel that you can wholly trust your car to react immediately and effectively. Unfortunately, many drivers experience terrible problems with their brake pedals, such as a soft or squishy feeling when pressed, the pedals sinking all the way to the floor, and low brake fluid levels that weaken braking power. They are more than just little nuisances, and they themselves require immediate action—red flags.   A faulty braking system can be the cause of hazardous situations: decreased stopping capacity or even total failure of the brakes. Checking Your Master Cylinder

  Your master cylinder, usually on the driver's side under your hood, contains your brake fluid. Look through the transparent sides of the cylinder for visible fluid levels. Take off the cap carefully—be careful not to get brake fluid on your skin or in your eyes. Check the color of the fluid—clean brake fluid should be clear to slightly golden. Look for signs of contamination or moisture.  

Signs of Brake Fluid Problems

  A simple moisture test can expose problems with brake fluid. Less than 2% moisture content is safe to use, while higher moisture levels need immediate fluid replacement. Dark or dirty fluid is a sign of contamination.  

Common Causes of Low Brake Fluid

  Your brake fluid may be low because of brake pad wear. As brake pads wear down, they need more fluid to function through normal brake pad wear. Leaks in the system may show visible fluid spots under your vehicle, wet or moist places around brake parts, or fluid marks on brake lines or fittings. Master cylinder issues can include failure of an internal seal, wearing down of the cylinder, or seal swelling caused by dirty fluid. It is not sufficient to merely top-up low brake fluid—problems must be traced and rectified. Low fluid levels may indicate worn-out brakes or leaks are likely to occur shortly, which needs professional attention.  

Signs of a Squishy Brake Pedal

  A squishy brake pedal can be terrifying the first time you encounter the problem. You will sink further into the brake pedal than usual, and the car may weave or pull to one side at some point in the process. That spongy feeling should clue you in that something is wrong with your brakes, and, yes, it poses a danger to you.  

Common Causes of a Spongy Brake Pedal

  There are actually only two common causes for that squishy feeling you might be having with your brake pedal. The first involves problems with the caliper, which is the most vital part of the braking system. It squeezes the brake pads against the rotor, creating friction and slowing down the vehicle. If there is any problem in the caliper, then squishy or soft brake pedal results. Most of the time, common failures in calipers involve sticking or freezing of the caliper pistons, which do not allow the proper movement of the pistons; internal seals that have worn out or are damaged, allowing brake fluid leakage; worn-out slider pins that will not allow free movement of the caliper; and torn dust boots allowing moisture inside to damage the components.   The second most common is related to the flex hose—a flexible hose connecting the rigid brake lines to the caliper that allows flexibility and movement when the brakes are applied. If there's a problem with the flex hose, it will start restricting the flow of brake fluid, resulting in a squishy pedal. Related problems are twisted or mechanically damaged hoses; swelling of the interior of the brake hose which closes off flow to brake fluid; material degradation of hose restricting brake fluid flow. Check the caliper for brake fluid seepage between the metallic piston and the dust boot, sticky caliper piston that does not move freely when pushed back, slider pins that don't move smoothly in and out of their brackets, and uneven wear patterns on the brake pads.   To help diagnose flex hose problems, first, take the cover off the bleeder screw on the caliper. Then, crack the bleeder screw open a little with a wrench and take a look to see the flow of brake fluid coming out; it should be nice and steady. If that's happening, there's probably nothing wrong with the hose. Restrictions or irregularities in the flow might indicate problems with the flex hose.   These symptoms of a squishy brake pedal demand immediate attention. It is very important to take them seriously and have them fixed quickly, since when you drive with defective brake parts, you stand the chance of losing your brakes during those emergency situations where you really need to rely on your brakes.  

Brakes Pedal Goes to the Floor

  A brake pedal that goes straight to the floor without resistance is a very serious safety problem that requires your immediate attention. If you have pressed the brake pedal and it went all the way down to the floor with little or no resistance at all, then the problem is most likely with your vehicle's braking system.   One possible cause for this issue could be air in the brake lines. When air bubbles become trapped in the system, they can distort the hydraulic pressure needed for proper braking. This causes a "spongy" feel before the pedal drops completely. Worn-out master cylinder seals are another concern. The master cylinder contains internal seals that, over time, can wear out. When the seals go, they can no longer take the pressure; therefore, brake fluid begins leaking past the seals, and the pedal sinks. Severe brake fluid leaks may result in complete loss of hydraulic pressure. You may see puddles of brake fluid under your car, dampness in the vicinity of brake parts, progressive decrease in brake fluid levels, or illumination of brake warning lights.   Warning signs include increased distance of pedal travel, inconsistent pedal resistance, brakes pumping necessity, and illumination of brake warning lights. A brake pedal that goes to the floor requires professional diagnosis and repair. Continuing to drive with this condition puts you and others at risk of brake failure.  

Why These Brake Pedal Problems Happen

  Your vehicle's braking system undergoes constant stress with every drive. The repeated action of pressing the brake pedal causes natural wear on various components. Brake pads and rotors experience friction-caused wear that impacts brake fluid level and pedal feel. Caliper pistons' internal seals may deteriorate, leading to fluid loss and loss of brake power. Slider pins can rust or seize if protective dust boots crack, while brake lines and flex hoses can develop internal blockages or damage over time.   A simple visual inspection can show some early warning signs: torn dust boots on caliper slider pins, brake fluid leaks around calipers, uneven brake pad wear, and contaminated or low brake fluid. All these can be prevented through regular maintenance. When one part starts to fail, it generally initiates a chain reaction to other parts. For example, when the seal of the caliper is damaged, fluid leaks contaminate the brake pads, thus lowering the efficiency of braking. Pro tip: Replace brake parts in pairs—that is, the parts on either side of the vehicle—for balanced braking. It will prevent uneven wear and ensure even stopping power from your vehicle's braking system.
