Its purpose is to enable the driver to maintain steering control by reducing the chances of skidding and possible accidents.

  An ABS includes several key components:   Wheel Speed Sensors: These sensors monitor the speed of each wheel individually and report that speed to the system.   Electronic Control Unit (ECU): This is the 'brain' of the ABS; it processes the data from the wheel speed sensors and decides whether to activate or not to activate the ABS.   Valves: These are in the brake lines and regulate brake pressure to each wheel.   Pump: When a valve drops the pressure in one of the brake lines, the pump restores the pressure.   Each of these elements plays an integral role in providing stability to your car in case of a sudden stop. This means increased stability and steering control, especially under sudden stops; increased performance on slippery surfaces because this system does not let all wheels lock up.   This system can be installed in passenger cars, SUVs, and many modern vehicles because it has good performance in maintaining control while reducing stopping distances. Rear-wheel-only ABS addresses issues to do with the locking of the rear wheels. Although not as complex as the 4-wheel, it has immense benefits!   Prevention of rear wheel lock-up assists in keeping up directional stability.   1970s: For the first time, Mercedes-Benz produced an electronic ABS in the S-Class, revolutionizing vehicle safety. 1980s: The ABS became more universal as BMW, together with Toyota, began to build it into their automobiles. 1990s: The use of microprocessors brought about an improvement in an ABS and further render it effective and trustworthy. Applications widened then from a wide range of vehicle types. ABS technology was greatly standardized by a federal mandate in the U.S.   The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2000, made it compulsory for all new passenger cars sold in the United States to be fitted with anti-lock brakes.   Understanding these historical developments and regulations puts into perspective the role of the ABS in modern vehicles.
