Florence, AL – Pest Control Specialist Shares Some Surprising Spider Facts

BY: Lee Davis, Southern Pride Pest Control

spider factsSpiders get a bad rep, though often due to misinformation and fear. So many people fear spiders, concerned they’ll get bitten and possibly die. While that is possible, it’s unlikely plausible, especially down here in Alabama.

Spiders aren’t as dangerous as we make them out to be, nor do they cause death as much as we think. Yet, most people would rather not share their home space with spiders!

Want to know more about spiders and spider bites? You’ve come to the right place. Read below for information concerning spider bites. Then, share this information with your friends. Enquiring minds want to know!

Spiders Are Beneficial

Spiders are beneficial to the environment, acting as predators for other insects and arthropods. In addition, they help keep gardens abundant with food and flowers and free from pesky pests. Since they won’t eat the veggies growing in the garden, there’s nothing more to worry about!

Bonus Benefit: The Halloween season is the spookiest time of the year when children all the way to adults enjoy over-the-top scariness. Spiders contribute to the spookiness of the Halloween season and the scariness that it creates.

Spiders Aren’t Out To Bite You

Some insects bite humans because they depend on blood for survival. This includes ticks, bed bugs, and mosquitoes. Spiders, oppositely, only feed on insects and arthropods. They usually bite people in self-defense, such as when a human disrupts its hiding space or attempts to kill it.

While we like to think spiders have their eye on humans, ready to aggressively attack and ruin our lives as they see fit, that’s simply untrue. This bit of information should certainly help ease some of the fear you experience over this pest.

The Brown Recluse spider is blamed for many bites, but statistics show that about 60% of all “Dangerous spider bites” occur in areas where this species does not exist. Even in the rare event, a spider survived transportation to one of these areas; bites are still rare.

The Black Widow spider has fangs that can penetrate human skin and cause serious illness with its neurotoxic venom.

Is it a Spider Bite?

Spider bites are distinguishable by two small punctures set closely together. The bite often swells, making identifying it more difficult since the puncture marks disappear. Spiders only bite once so if there are several bite marks, a spider is not the culprit.

Spider bites usually itch and cause localized pain. Once the swelling subsides, a white blister may be left behind by a spider bite. Many other signs suggest you’ve been bitten by a spider:

  • Headache
  • Nausea/ Vomiting
  • Pain in the area
  • Swelling
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Sweating
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Rashes

If you suspect you have been bitten by a spider and experience the signs above, visit your physician or a local hospital emergency facility.
