Muscle Shoals, AL Pest Control Professional Answers Question: Do Moths Bite?

do moths bite

Moths are in the same family as butterflies. The insect is pretty genius, to say the least. It’s one of the most important pollinators in the world, producing pollen on every single flower it lands on. Moths can evenimpersonate other insects, such as tarantulas-when they sense danger. This helps the moth amazingly escape from potential harm unscathed.  Unlike mosquitoes, fleas, and other insects, Moths do not carry or transmit diseases to humans. Yet, humans still characterize moths as annoying creatures that must be destroyed.

Moths are extremely attracted to light and often hang out near fixtures in the home fluttering their wings in excitement at the prize they’ve found.

Moths Like Dark Spaces & Light

Some moths invade dressers and closets. They’re attracted to light as well as dirty clothing and dark, warm, and humid places. Dressers and closets make the perfect spot for the Moth to get what it wants out of this thing called life-a place to lay its eggs. They leave behind snotty-looking feces wherever they go, which certainly is the biggest disadvantage of this insect.

Adult moths usually do not bite humans, insects, or animals. Doing so would be pretty difficult considering they don’t have mouths that would allow them to bite. The adult moth is known to feed on nectar.  Larvae, or caterpillars, on the other hand, can and will bite humans. They also invade clothing found in dressers and closets if born in the areas.

Moth larvae bites can sting and cause intense pain to an unsuspecting victim.

The Vampire Moth

The Moths you see flying around the house do not have the ability to bite.  There are more than 165,000 types of Moths out there but only 150 of them can bite.  Generally, biting Moths will not come inside your home.

The genus Calyptra moth species, also called the vampire moth, is one exception to the rule. This moth possesses a proboscis feeding tube that can pierce through human skin to suck blood.  Keep in mind that just because a Moth can bite a human doesn’t mean that it will. Most Moths use their piercing abilities for nectar/fruit.

Moth Dangers

Moths are annoying little creatures that can infest a home and cause problems like allergic reactions, pet and human food contamination, and damage to clothing. Thankfully, moths do not cause disease and generally will not bite humans or pets. If you are concerned with a Moth infestation in your home, calling pest control professionals is the ideal solution.
