termite control expertsHave you ever wanted to learn as much information about termites as possible? We didn’t think so but thought asking was worth a shot. Don’t allow that to discourage you. Termites aren’t exactly a hot topic and most people could care less about them so long as there is not an infestation at their home. We get it. It is time to wander into new territory and expand your termite knowledge. It is pretty easy to do and the information you learn can very well provide you with something to talk about or even better, save you money in the event termites swarm your property. Besides, we think the termite facts you’ll learn here are pretty cool!

Termite Species

There are more than 2,700 species of termites in the world. Luckily -if that word can sensibly be used in the same sentence as a termite- only two of them exist in Northern Alabama. The Formosan termite -the most aggressive of the species -and the Subterranean termite are found in this area of the state.

Enemy Number One

Ants and termites resemble one another but these pests sure do not like one another. Ants are the number one competition for termites. The two pest species will fight it out until the end for control over territory and food.

Termite Dinner

Termites are a delicacy in some countries like South Africa and Zimbabwe. Even crazier, termites are pretty nutritious, making them a good dinner choice if you can stomach the idea of eating the tiny pest. Termites are rich in calcium and protein and are filled with amino acids! Eat up!

Speaking of Termite Dinner…

Put down any food headed toward your mouth at this very moment. Ready? Termites eat one another’s feces. They begin eating feces after birth because they do not have any bacteria in their bodies. The process does not stop. Termites are very clean and hygienic pests otherwise and spend much of their “free” time cleaning and grooming themselves. Truth be told, eating one another’s feces is beneficial, too, since it prepares them to munch away at all that wood!

Significant Damage From Beneficial Pests

Known as “Silent Destroyers,” termites sweep through homes seemingly undetected, munching away at the cellulose found in wood. Termites cause more than $5 billion in damages to unsuspecting homeowners every single year. On the other hand, termites are beneficial to the ecosystem and to humans when they’re in the right environment. Now that you’ve become the termite expert you never wanted to be, protect your home against this pest and give us a call for termite prevention or treatment at your home.
