Winter brings additional challenges for our health. The prevalence of the flu and common colds put many people at risk. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) may impact the mental well-being of an individual when the skies are gray and it’s gloomy outside. The health risks often forgotten are those brought on by rodents that seek shelter inside homes when temperatures plunge. Each year, about 21 million American homes deal with rodent infestations, placing their health at risk.

Mice and rats search for warmth and food indoors, oftentimes coming inside through small cracks and crevices around the home. Usually, their entry is unwelcomed and unbeknownst to residents inside.  Rodents endanger homes but more frighteningly, can spread diseases and health concerns. Mice and rat feces can spread bacteria, trigger allergic reactions, and contaminated food sources. Once dry, fecal matter can be hazardous to breathe.

Most Common Disease Spread by Mice & Rats

Hantavirus

Hantavirus is a potentially life-threatening disease transmitted by rodents to humans, primarily the white-footed deer mouse. Exposure and inhalation of infected mouse urine, droppings, or saliva cause infections. People sharing spaces where rodents actively live have an increased chance of developing Hantavirus. Fatigue, fever, and muscle aches are signs of the disease, according to the CDC.

Bubonic Plague

The Plague is highly contagious and deadly. It is spread through the bite of an infected rodent and causes symptoms including swollen and painful lymph nodes, headache, and high fever.

Salmonellosis

Salmonellosis is a type of food poisoning spread by rodent feces. Salmonella lives in the intestinal tracts of animals and rodents. The disease Salmonellosis occurs through the consumption of contaminated foods. Symptoms of Salmonellosis typically include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain. About 40,000 cases of Salmonella are reported each year in the U.S.

Property Threats

Additionally, rodents destroy property, causing massive damage as they destroy insulation, chew through wallboards and electrical wiring, and otherwise wreak havoc. Up to 25% of all house fires in the U.S. occur due to damages caused by rodents.

A mouse infestation can grow out of control in a matter of weeks. Prevention is the best line of defense to keep rodents out of your home.
