Setting the record straight on pest control myths

pest control myths Pests come indoors seeking shelter and food sources, causing a nuisance as they damage fixtures, the structure of the home, destroy food, and otherwise wreak havoc. Pests like cockroaches and Stink bugs create unpleasant odors and may even carry disease or otherwise pose health risks. Preventing and eliminating pests requires effective solutions.  Myths exist, which create trouble for those who believe the hype and attempt to prevent or treat pests with the methods. Save time, money, and avoid frustrations by learning the truth about the most common pest control myths going around. This list provides a great starting point for information.

Myth 1: Mice Love Cheese

Remember when Tom tried to lure Jerry out of his hole with a slab of cheese? The “mice love cheese” myth has been floating around for a long time. They’ll eat cheese (as will cats,) but don’t prefer it over other foods. Baiting mice is best done with dried fruit and/or peanut butter. Use one of the two choices for more effective mice control if the rodent makes its way into your home.

Myth 2: Bees Sting Only Once

Ever heard that bees can sting only once, then die off? You guessed it: just a myth. While the female honey bee dies after she stings, this is not true of all bee species. Wasps, for example, sting multiple times without much more than flinching their stingers!

Myth 3: Pests Do Not Come Inside Clean Homes

A clean home reduces the risks of pest infestations but does not eliminate them entirely. Cockroaches and other pests prefer dirtier homes that make food easily accessible. That isn't to say that pests don’t infest clean homes; they can and do. Other pests come inside for warmth; they aren't choosy about what the house looks like inside. Keep the home clean but do not expect this to be a foolproof method of keeping pests away.

Myth 4: Pets Keep Pests Away

Furry friends complete our lives but do not count on them to keep pests away, especially as a long-term solution.  Referring back to Tom & Jerry, remember how lazy Tom was? Some cats aren’t really into chasing mice or insects. Same rule applies to dogs. Pets may also damage fixtures and spaces in the home chasing pests around. Don't depend on pets for pest control solutions!

Myth 5: Ultrasonic Sounds Keep Pests Away

Myth!  Though pests can hear sounds we cannot, there is no proof indicating that the devices offer long-term pest solutions. The devices may cause infections to increase and the device can interfere with hearing aids,  security alarm, and other devices.

Myth 6:  Concrete Slab Homes are Termite-Proof

How nice that myth sounds, but the reality is that all homes, even concretes slab and brick homes, are susceptible to termites damage. They reach through even the smallest cracks to reach wood interiors where they dine upon the cellulose until the structure is severely damaged or depleted. Regular termites inspections from Southern Pride Pest Control is the best termites solution.

Myth 7:  Cockroaches Can Survive Without Heads

Cool story, bro, but it’s merely a fable. Cockroaches breathe through holes spread out through their bodies, but the roach will eventually starve to death in a week or less since it cannot eat without a head.

Myth 8: You Always See Pests in the House

Pests survive when they stay hidden from human view, especially inside a home. They work diligently to conceal themselves and come out most often when people are not around. Do not assume that insects and rodents are not a problem because they can hide in walls, underneath floors, and come inside while the family sleeps.   Our annual inspections provide peace of mind that your home is pest-free or helps treat the problem before serious damage occurs.
