U.S. News & World Reports 2018-2019’s “Best Hospitals Rankings” listed Texas Medical Center as one of the Top 10 hospitals in the country in several medical specialties. That comes as no surprise to Houstonians, as our medical center has been consistent on this highly envied list since it’s very first publication in 1990. The Menninger Clinic came in at number five for adult psychiatry care, we snagged the number 4 spot for pediatric care with Texas Childrens, we were ranked third for adult rehabilitation at TIRR Memorial Hermann, and came in first for Adult cancer care nationwide with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
How do they get their results and choose these rankings? U.S. news tredges through the data of almost 5,000 hospitals. They then delve into physician surveys and patient survival rates, not to mention quality, safety and patient to provider ratios in order to come up with the final rankings. MD Anderson has oscillated between the number one and two spots since the conception of the rankings report. That’s 29 years of excellence!
Beyond the ranking, Texas Medical Center has been called a “City within a City” by Forbes. TMC has been noted as the world’s largest life sciences destination with forty-four member institutions, 106,000 employees, and 7.2 million visitors a year on a beautiful 1,345 acre campus. The area was founded in 1945 by multiple private
donations with a vision to cluster non-profit health facilities to further medical knowledge. Even today, they have tried to honor this, by leasing land to various institutions for annually. These institutions are free to function autonomously, but with the support of the TMC organization.
Among the center’s facilities are a multitude of academic institutions, pharmacy schools, nursing programs and a dental school. Several Texas Universities have medical schools in the area including, Rice, Baylor, UT, and Texas A&M.
The growth and success of the worlds largest medical center is truly unique to Houston and has been hailed as a “purely Houstonian story…showing how the citiy’s fundamental trails allow all the greatest assets around health care to grow and flourish.” Just another reason to be proud as a Houstonian!
