In the sections to follow, I will discuss a few tips for new CFOs which can help them get off to a fast start.
Assess Your Team
No matter how skilled you are, you can’t run your entire department by yourself. You will have to rely on your team members to carry out your agenda and ensure maximum profits, so an important first step as a new CFO is to get to know your team. By understanding which people have certain strengths, you can get a better grasp of who you can count on and who you should focus on to develop their talents into future company leaders.
Prioritize Communication
The mark of an effective leader is how well they communicate. No matter what size group you lead or which department you oversee, communication is key. This is especially true for CFOs, where expectations for performance must be clear and everyone needs to be on the same page regarding the role they play in the entire process. By ensuring communication is clear, concise and effective, you give your team the best chance to succeed.
Evaluate Current Processes
While you shouldn’t go in and seek to overhaul the department overnight, there is merit in evaluating how things are done and putting your own touches on the company’s financial processes. By taking time to seek feedback on how things work and observing areas for improvement, you can implement incremental change and improve overall efficiency.
Seek Input from Team Members
A lot of executives claim to have an open door policy and encourage feedback, but if you really make an effort to listen to your team it will help your department tremendously. Your people are the ones on the ground doing the work. Since they’re closest to the daily operations, their insight into your process is vital to operating effectively.
